.pp.ua is a quite unique one. It is not someone who owns the domain pp.ua and gives away subdomains of it, it is actually an extention run by the Ukrainian registry.
The unique fact: depending on what site you use (the registry or an accredited registrar) you can actually get a .pp.ua domain totally free, or you pay a very low once-off sum after which renewals are free.
The Ukrainian registry claims this is one of the only free extentions. "One of the only" does not equal "the only", so they seem to suggest that there are a very few other such extentions that are either free or that come with a once-off payment and then can be renewed for free for as many years as you wish.
I wonder, if there are any similar ones, which extentions that would be. I've never come across one really, unless Jamaican domains are indeed free (I found a form on the Jamaican registry's site where you can request a free domain, but I doubt if that actually is still relevant as some registrars ask quite high prices for Jamaican domains). Does anyone know, is .pp.ua indeed the only such extention, or are there indeed a couple of others?
I'm talking about real extentions here. Not free subdomains of a domain someone owns (such as the free subdomains under .eu.org) but actual extentions (second-level or third-level domains) run by the actual registry.
PS: I know such domains are not intended for getting and selling with profit. I'm mostly curious because they, in my opinion, can be interesting for small websites I run for which I don't feel like paying a proper domain. I do have several proper domains that I happily pay for for the websites I have been running for many years. When starting a new website of which I'm not sure if I will maintain it long term, such low-cost or free extentions (no matter how "obscure" the ccTLD) are useful. They can also be useful to register and redirect to your social media accounts, as some social media platforms give you quite lengthy hard-to-memorise URL's. For such social media accounts I'd rather not spend money on a common domain, but if you can use a free one or a domain you pay one time and then renew for free for many years to come... then it's a different story.
Again, I'm talking about real extentions = run by the registry. The likes of .eu.org (I'm not even sure if they're still accepting new registrations, their page is hopelessly outdated) or previously .co.tv are just free subdomains of a domain owned by someone, thus not reliable for the long term.
