So a couple days ago I wrote a post about Covid names and how people feel about those who register them. The conversation got a tad nasty on both sides. So now DAN.com (an advertiser here) tweeted today they are removing Coronavirus/Covid-19 from their platform. Starting from today, we will be removing all Corona Virus […]

i think its okay.
the real problems may begin if or when by some strange sequence of events where all businesses around us collapse and the economy collapses due to the virus, we begin losing our domains... which really aren't ours per se, just rented out for a year or so, when registrars begin to shut down... like rest of businesses and economy.. its a remote chance... but still... how remote did it seem to us all 3-4 months ago, that the world would look like it does today... with half the world locked at homes, with no businesses and no incomes.

with what we are witnessin today, taken straight out of our dreams and horros movies, i no longer see anything that may happen in future as utterly impossible.

Nope.

hypocritical double standards. No one buys them anyway.

Focus on blatant cybersquatters;. "NetKnicks.com" or NetKnicks.com (BuyDomains)

Feels grandstanding imo, and been against corona dns since day1...

Jon Schulz noticed

GoDaddy has also removed Covid-19 domains from GoDaddy Auctions and Afternic.

But you’re in luck, they will still sell you their domains PandemicOutbreak.com – for $4,999 – and BirdFluPandemic.net – for $1,999 – at their private domain sales website NameFind.com (as well as GDA and Afternic).

They also own AvianFlu.com, which just says “Request Price” at NameFind and has a minimum bid of $32,500 at GDA and Afternic.

@Sedo you might want to remove RapeWorld.com and ExtremeRape.com listed in the last few weeks.

How ethical and acceptable would be auctioning for astronomical high prices the non-corona domains that people with no income because of the crisis had to drop?

Not any more slippery slope than gambling, alcohol, candy, tobacco, vaping, betting, vice-names, personal names, and on and on and on.

Its just a knee-jerk SJW move and others will copy-cat grandstand I am sure. IMO of course.

Thanks, like I said elsewhere its like CVS banning tobacco sales hiding behind "we want to help people find the path of better health" but oh, hey, we're not getting rid of candy and chocolate and chips to help you on that obesity and diabetes path. :)

Maybe refers to knickers.

"Net" is 75% "Nets"& Knicks is 100% "Knicks" Both in NY.

Conveniently priced just below UDRP. Right.

The biggest potential danger is chaos.

if economy collapses then chaos will happen and if that happens then nothing will be predictable.

Why you support Buydomains cybersquatting?

I 100% agree it's a slippery slope... If they're willing to officially ban Corona/Covid names then there's a lot more work they need to do... It's incredibly hard to draw a line.

Hi Equity78,

Thanks for pointing out those names that have slipped through the blocking process. I have asked our security team to delete and block them as they are certainly not domains that we want listed on our marketplace.

All the best
Chris

Most registrars ToS let them cancel your domain registration if they feel like it, by having vague ToS referring to things like morality and giving offence. Some registries have similar - the .in registry can and does cancel adult domains, the .me one can as well.

Laws and contracts aside, what you are up against here is the strength of public feeling and a commercial enterprise then probably making a guess about what helps their profits more - looking responsible by preventing abuse or looking responsible by supporting freedom of speech, roughly. A small commission on a once in a blue moon sale of a disaster domain may just not be worth the loss of reputation and customers for being seen to handle distasteful domains like that.

Marketplaces don't have to take any listings, it is their shop and they decide what is in it, doesn't stop a domain owner from putting up their own sales lander.

Can't stand these self-righteous companies on their high-horses pretending like they give a damn.

We are not children, let us register what we want.

It’s called “grandstanding”

they’re doing it for media praise.

Very true Carob this has happened a few times with nothing as serious as Covid-19.

This morning I woke up to an email from Sedo.com stating that they've removed a domain that I registered in 2005, listed with them in 2008, but suddenly doesnt fit their knee-jerk SJW virtue signaling agenda. The entire thing drools with hypocrisy.

Meanwhile, names like abusewomen.com, rapeteen.com, abusechildren.com, howtokillmyself.com, abuseladies.com, babytrafficking.com, babyxxx.com, kidhot.com, youthporn.com, kidsex.de, howtogetawaywithmurder.com, commit-suicide.com, drugtrafficking.net, howtocheatonyourwife.com, and thousands of other repugnant domains are perfectly OK to remain in their inventory.

In fact(!) if the disgusting domain term that you're seeking in their inventory is not registered, they'll facilitate the purchase for you, to their profit I am sure, with a partner registrar..... one who also bent over backward and cracked in half to remove "virus" domains but leave the other disgusting names for sale. Ridiculous BS is what it is.

Or perhaps its because someone made a low-ball offer on that very name 10 days ago at Sedo and I didnt reply, so they complained to Sedo like a bratty kid would and Sedo became aware of something that was listed in their inventory for a dozen years and registered nearly 15 years ago.

Hi AnthonyD

Firstly thank you for bringing our attention to those names, we certainly do not want to have those types of domain listed on our marketplace and I have asked our security team to block them ASAP, which they will do as a matter of course.

Sedo has a very large marketplace with more than 19 million domains, it is true that domains may slip through the net with the listing process, domains which we would usually like to be blocked. This is why we have a dedicated security team which troll through the marketplace on a daily basis, looking for those types of domains manually. As you can appreciate this is no small task with more than 19 million domains and thousands being added on a daily basis; some can take longer than others to be removed. Also if a domain is brought to our attention as you have done, then yes we can remove them directly that way. While Sedo strives to protect our users’ rights to exercise free speech and maintain a marketplace with a vibrant and diverse collection of domain names, Sedo strives to protect Internet users from domain names that contain illegal subject material or that promote hatred, child pornography, etc. It is a domain owners sole responsibility to ensure the listing does not violate these standards. Users who continually attempt to list for sale or park domains in violation of this policy risk suspension or cancellation of their Sedo accounts. A copy of the policy may be found in the Policies section of the Sedo website or by clicking here: https://sedo.com/us/about-us/policies/offensive-domain-policy/?tracked=&partnerid=&language=us

In the course of removing offensive domains from our system there is the possibility that otherwise legitimate domains could be suspended due to their inclusion of offensive terms used in different contexts. If sellers feel like the action we have taken is wrong then they can simply contact our legal department at [email protected] with their appeal for consideration.

Just to clarify, Sedo will also not assist anyone in buying a domain name that is against our policies, if you search for a domain name on our marketplace and it does not show, an automated message will show as standard to say we can help you acquire a domain. However, if you did try to apply for the service with such a domain, then as soon as there is human interaction and a member of our sales team manually looks at the application they would simply reject it.

No we do not operate double standards and yes we do take blocking of names related to the corona virus seriously as we want to make it absolutely clear that we do not want to profit from others misfortune!

I am sorry to read that your upset with your domain being blocked, if you believe that this decision has not been made correctly then please appeal to our legal team [email protected].

I wish you every success in your future domain sales.

Chris
