India is a huge country with a growing economy and very widespread English usage and Internet savy. That is the pro.

The con is that the Indian economy functions at a level so much lower than the American or European that a $100 domain would be a major purchase for all but the largest Indian companies.

One more factor working for .in/.co.in names is the very week dollar. An year earlier, the exchange rate was 46.20 Indian Rupees to a dollar. Right now, its 39 rupees to a dollar. This has (and will continue to) increased the purchasing power of Indian buyers...

Indian market is huge definitely.
I was going thru some tasted domains the other day and it was shocking to see every other batch of indian origin (words like inidashopping etc, or hindi words typed in english). Indians have already started playing with .com's in major numbers. I can see companies adopting .coms very fast. Every Pvt Ltd in India is going for an internet address. You pick up the yellow pages and you will find that majority of companies listed have an Internet address.

Looking at that, i wud presume India is moving very fast towards the net. Point is, is the CO.IN and .IN market a profitable one? When the Internet Boom finally gets bigger (i wud think it has already arrived, it just has to go at this rate to get noticeable very soon), would Indian companies go for .in's or wud they still choose generics or geos with their company names in .com.

This is something we will have to wait and see.

if you look at the alexa top 100 for india most of the names are .com or .co.in.
that said, registrations of .in are overtaking .co.in with quality names being much easier to reg in .co.in than .in. this tells me the market is placing its money on .in.

definetely a great investment
both .co.ins and .ins
the hard part is to hold them so long(and pay the reg fees).
