Interesting read, wanted to share it.

What do you think the future of EMDs looks like?

I don’t think Google slapped Exact Match domains rather I believe slapped those who only created backlinks with EM anchor texts. Google wants verities in anchor texts and that is where most of EMDs were punished. And IMO this is/was the main problem with EMDs now.

You may go with an EMD but have to have many different anchor texts. And if you build many different anchor texts then what's the point of buying an EMD.

And personally I think Google has nothing to do with EMDs. It’s all about Anchor Text.

And if you know about SEO then you wouldn’t even bother about EMD anymore. It’s an old idea. EMDs can increase your CTR a lot tough. but Rather than EMD you would bother EM Title.

I personally believe, from SEO prospective/future EMDs are losing importance and values.

Many claim that the future of domain names is in brandables.

already SEO experts are very unhappy with Google's new Algorithm...some of them are claiming "SEO is Dead" some are claiming "Killing SEO"....

and probably slowly killing Domainers also....or domain industry....

and i do believe it....google is changing the game....and we are helpless here....

yes i agree with those....Google wants brand or branding now...and this is where Domain Industry is in trouble....

even many claim old undeveloped domain names are also losing importance and values...and heard (now) google treat them just like a new domain.....this is really frustrating....

That's because Exact match Domains, are already poisoned. Perhaps more than half of all existing EMDs you can stumble upon on the internet, are held/operated by domainers containing spin-off content.

So people are now brainwashed into thinking that if it's an EMD, then it contains worthless content. And oftentimes, they are proven correct. Many end-users who own EMDs, normally just redirect them to their brandables.

I think EMD's for development purposes are great for ranking in low competition niche area's but when it comes to high competition niches an EMD means almost nothing for your ranking. Google loves good content and good natural backlinks and constantly change their algorithm to try and put these kinds of sites first.

I don't think SEO is dead, Google is just putting higher authority sites at the top of their list and not giving the newcomers a chance. SEO will still help your rankings, but you have to play catch up with the big dogs to see any GOOD rankings.

As the article states, good EMDs are and probably always will be good. The problem that people have is one of their own misplaced valuation -- the value and power of EMDs isn't in decline; rather, the illusion of their value being much more than it is is finally falling apart.

EMD's seem like a viable domain to hold I just wouldn't get carried away with too many words in the domain. I would keep it to two like awesomedomain.com at the most. A lot of them I see being developed are fourorfivekeywordsthatgotogetherinaphrase.com They look awful in the URL bar and even worse when you are trying to share them on social networks or guest posting. They look spammy.

After a few weeks of observing with this latest Google change, one thing i have noticed at my end is that Exact Match Facebook subdomains have come back with a vengeance.

In the last Penguin update, i was able to bury my competitor down the order who used an exact match facebook subdomain identical to my .com domain. Now, his facebook account bounced back from the dead and is now neck-to-neck with my domain again. I checked his account, there's nothing much quality content added there.
