Are directories necessary for SEO?

I have not had the time to submit my sites manually to directories, and have been getting decent links elsewhere. I am wondering if links from directories will give my serps a noticeable increase.

links do play a big part of search engine optimization, but it all depends on the quality of links too. getting a backlink from dmoz or yahoo is a hundred times better than backlinks from a hundred small unknown directories.

also, if you're targeting a very competitive keyword, then submitting to directories alone isn't going to be enough.

Anything done positive from the SEO point of view is good. May it be directory submission to articles.

You can add your site to the directories and make this as your daily routine (15-20 per day) as there are a large number of directories on the net and doing this will give your site a boost in the SERP's which will be noticed gradually.
Though this method is not compulsory or imperative but doing this will always be more beneficial compared to if not done at all.

Directory submission helps little much to increase search engines ranking position .It is only one factor for serps.

You cannot obviously expect too much traffic from a directory submission, but you can expect an improvement in your search engine placement. Directory submission also help to increase PR.

they're mainly for backlinks esp. directory that don't require any reciprocals are better to submit to, on the other hand you are providing content for their directory which this directories are hungry for, assuming you got a good content site.

directory submission are used for back links just like what others said.. it is one way of link building..

Links are necessary, directories not. You are fine if you are able to get strong links elsewhere. Though Dmoz is still worth IMHO.

Take the time to submit to like 20-30 directories per day is a good Idea, and over a month or more you will notice your backlinks increase.. and your SE ranking many also increase... plus you may get a little traffic from the directories you submit to also.

So it is worth spending 30mins a day on it for sure.

I don't think it's worth it spending 30 minures a day. Better to outsource that because anyone can do the directory submissions.

Better to use your time to look for qaulity backlinks and spend your time writting content.

I think are as many good as bad directories out there. I agree Directories will not bring good amount of traffic but helps in PR juice. I have gained some from it to my various sites. So I believe Directories are for PR only..., mostly.

Go for "quality" directory, not on quantity. Directory is expensive. Good for those who have extra cash.

Directory submission is a good and easy way to get backlinks for a new site. Having your site submitted so some few good directories would be better than submitting to a thousand crappy directories.

Quality is still the name of the game. Some pointers in selecting which directories to submit to:

High PR - indication that Google sees some value in the directory.
Well maintained - listed sites are in the proper category
High Traffic - getting traffic could be minimal form directories, but majority are targeted
Kewords ranking high in SERP - Well optimized, shows that the directory is well-marketed and SEO'ed.

Which to avoid:
Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed

There are many. Best ones are from directorycritic.com, info.vilesilencer.com, addurl.nu.
You can submit your website into them and it will help mostly for PR not Traffic.
