Submiting a site to 100-1000 directories

Hello,

I was wondering how much would hurt seo if I submit my site to, lets say 700 directories in a day or two (via automated software or paid manual submission)?

I have one 7 months old site which ranks number 2 on google for the specific term and receive about 5000 visits from google per month, and it has not any backlinks. I was thinking of paid submission to 800 directories and watch the results.

it would not hurt you at all.. because not all directories will approve your site, and the rest will take from 1 day to 4 weeks and some even take months...

So i would say go for it..

Go for it. It takes time for directory owners to approve your site. A certain percentage of them will approve it. Then google will only discover your link on such directories really slowlly. So it will not look like you are building your link so quickly. Plus you will finish a tedious job in a single day and you won't have to worry about it.

Once approved

Assume that about half will every get approved (over several weeks) but it'll take months for those backlinks to get indexed. No big problem because the few backlinks that will show up will be very spread out.

700 directories / day ? This is a very bad idea. If 100 directories are aproved in the first day you will have problems. Say goodbye to your site.

My suggestion will be to only submit your site to top directories like Yahoo Dir etc. I have done directory submission for one of my sites, one year ago. I submitted to more than 1000 directories. But in Google Webmaster tools, I only see 10 or so backlinks coming from those directories. That was few years back. If I check now, I see 3 or so links from those 1000's of submissions I did to directories.

Anyway, backlinks cannot hurt a site as we cannot control who links to us. We can only control to whom we link to. So even if you get 100's of links in a day, that cannot hurt your site.
