Are current event domains worthless?

Last week someone registered frankenstorm.net for under $10 and now they want $10,000USD for it.

The owner of josephkony.com is asking $5000 for their domain. Despite all the hype and news on this topic in the last year, not 1 offer on sedo.

So are current event domains basically worthless?

maybe they don't know how to sell it ?
maybe they aren't worth that much?
maybe the names aren't good enough?

maybe all the above?

first it would gain traffic due to the event, and then it might generate parking revenue...so it could be a good quick investment for parking revenue.

so it wouldn't be worthless as long as it made back the reg fee, anything after that is a bonus.

Time sensitive domain. And what would you do with it exactly ? (*)

Go figure...

In general, yes. Domains that are not commercially viable - or those that are time sensitive - will have a hard time selling.

Predictive domaining (future trends/words) isn't easy either... it's the most speculative aspect of a speculative trade :)

(*) The sad thing is that the owners might decide to cling on to their domains for ten years until they realize they have zero upside.
IMO it's the most pathetic thing in our industry, people clinging on to bad domains like a lifeline.

Well, all you would have to do is make $10 per year for it to be viable.

1. Parking
2. Sell two "I survived Frankenstorm" shirts per year
3. Possible Al Franken-Tim Storm (FatWallet) presidential ticket.
