Anyone Every Check If The Names They Dropped Get Picked Up Again..

Well this year I have dropped about 50 names, and I decided to check how many got re-registered, about 90% of them got picked up again, many of them by Rare Names Inc., who not only reg them for one year, but two... I am guessing this is buydomains? I am suprised as the reason I dropped these mainly .coms were they were decent names, but not good, mainly two-three word .coms... It is good to see that their is interest out there, but this year have focused more on quality, and domains that have a coherent meaning and a tried and true brand marketplace... Just wanted to see if anyone had anything similar happen to their drops.

Most of my names are at GoDaddy. One nice thing is that they go the TDNAM after they expire so you can watch the auction, if the name gets bid up to a grand you just pay the $80 and renew it, if not then that confirms it is junk and you move on...

I've had the exact same thing happen, but it's even more amusing.

- The domain was included in a small portfolio that I submitted to buydomains.com
- They didn't have any interest in the domains
- A while after it dropped they registered it, and it's now for sale on buydomains.com for $4,188 USD

I've known of people submitting quality domains to them but the answer is always, "we're not interested right now", and then they try to backend you over to Afternic to list your domains. Makes me wonder if they ever accept domains, or if it's just a way of trying to get you on Afternic.

I probably should'nt but yes I do check later to see if someone else got them, a few that I can remember were:

n z l o d g e s.c o m - enduser picked it up

P r o v i s u a l s.c o m - enduser picked it up

d u b a i j e t s k i.c o m - domainer picked it up

There was a couple others that BuyDomains picked up but I can remember offhand what they were.

That's the problem with holding too many "usable names" with very little traffic that don't pay their reg fees...the longer you hold them the more they eat into profits, even more so now with the crappy parking payouts :|

...ya win some ya loose some

Often my drops get picked up by Buydomains or Vaxis. Probably means you're doing something right :)
Gazzip sums it up just fine. We're all somewhere in the food chain

That's because (1) BuyDomains.com never pays less than $10 for a domain offered them (if they accept it), and (2) BuyDomains.com themselves could register the domain on the drop for about $6.85. So the name was worth somewhere between $6.85 and $10 according to their automated appraisal tools. By picking up the domain after you allowed it to drop instead of purchasing it from you directly, they saved 30%. So this was a smart move on their part.

(Compound these 30% savings over hundreds of thousands of domains per year...)

Well, yeah, I understand why they do this, I just found it amusing that they tell people that the domains they submitted aren't what they're looking for, yet they register the domains later themselves and put ridiculous prices on them.

I didn't say it wasn't good business on their part, I just said it was amusing because they rarely seem to accept domains, and then they just backend you over to Afternic.

I make it a point never to check on my dropped dn's. If I found out a dn had been picked up, I would start second guessing myself on EVERY domain from that point forward and then NEVER drop a domain again...

Hell, my biggest fear is that I'll take a look at DNJournals weekly sales one day and see one of my dropped names listed for having sold at $x,xxx (or more!?!?!). :'(

It is an excellent strategy in their part.

Submit your domain to them
then your domains get rejected
domain holders get discourage from rejection (thinking that their domains worth nothing)
domain holders dropped the domains
then they will picked up the domains for reg. fee

ahh...psychological warfare indeed

Why pay more if you they can pay less

At their prices, BuyDomains needs a huge inventory to get sales. I think I read somewhere that they move only 1% of their inventory per year.

It's a big mystery to me since the majority of my expirations get picked up on the drop by places such as buydomains (rare names), snapnames and others for more money than I would have sold them for on the forums.

Not sure why tha happens so often?

I've actually been surprised at how many of mine have been picked up. There were a couple I knew would and there are some that I didn't expect at all.

I'm definitley not batting 100% though.

Btw...the avatars are getting more interesting around here by the day.

DomainTools alerts me every time a name I dropped gets registered and it happens in about 90% of cases. I offered most of my domains to buydomains (to check what they think) and they offered 10-15$ for keyword names that I later sold for $500, but strangely offered $40-$110 for LLLL.coms that were not premium...

Yes i noticed a company, maybe it's buy domains, maybe not, has grabbed a couple.

More alarming though is the company, DomainRenewalGroup(.)com claiming to be registered in Australia, whois in the USA that keeps sending me letters saying i should re register my dropping domains with them for $79.00 a year! They run DROA(.)com also.

Not a chance.

The very few I've dropped have mostly been picked up. Good luck to them. I dropped them because I didn't think they were worth keeping. I don't have any regrets.

One odd thing is that a buyer approached me out of the blue for a domain (and I wasn't even trying to sell it). He paid low $x,xxx so I was waiting for something interesting to happen next. Nothing ever did, and it still looks like it's been parked. I still don't really understand why he bought it.

well , actually one time they did come back to me after sending them an email about one of domains , offering me a really low offer for it

so i guess they do buy domains from time to time , if u are willing to go really cheap for it
