I was greatly thinking of testing out the linux os ubuntu? If you have do you prefer it over windows? It says on the site it takes 2 gigs to install from the desktop installer? Thats crazy! I think ill just run it from the disc overtop of windows:) :hehe:

I was turned off, by not having all of the packages I needed to download to do certain things. Especially when it came to watching DVDs

I was using ubuntu, kubuntu, opensuse etc. for long time, now back to windows vista ... if you are working on GUI mode then its fine no need to study a lot ,but still missing too many things like messengers, photoshop etc. there are alternative programs but nothing feels like what you are used to in windows ;) .. give it a try for fun and as far as I remember you cant make dual installation if you got vista on your computer ..

Good luck

I recently bought a new computer after my desktop went down and it had Vista loaded on it. I did a dual boot system with Mandriva and was fairly satisfied and started out running Mandriva but then got more interested in Vista, which despite it's hogging resources, is a good OS. I've heard a lot of good about Ubuntu and it seems to be better than Mandriva. It's worth a shot, but I'd recommend testing it out to be sure to get true experience. You'll find a lot of biased people on both sides.

Well right now im running on xp, so i don't have to worry about the dual install. I wasn't goig to install it right off the bat, you can run it from a cd without installing it.

I've tried it and eventually may want to make the switch over to Linux.. Is there a Windows shell that will allow me to run my Windows programs or do I need to dual-boot?

I've used linux for a long time now, red hat, debian, ubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu now for at leat 2 years. Works great, it is true you won't be able to use Photoshop, but that is the only big downfall, for me at least. Pretty much everything else you want to do you can, and can usually do it even better.

One other thing though, if you are into gaming on your computer Linux is not right for you, yet. That is the only reason I dual boot because I have to have my games.

I have ubuntu on my laptop. I never had problems with it. And I really like it's mousepad features - browsing online was never so easy :) Put your finger in the right side and you can use it to scroll the page.

Well i don't use photoshop and i don't get into gaming. So i take it that ubuntu would be perfect for me. Do you have to use a cd to setup a dual boot? Or how would i go about doing that.
