Computer Delimma... Linux & Windows

Hi all,

I love Linux. And I hate Windows. But in order to survive in the tech world, I need windows -_- (to make Windows apps... to make money, ya know?)

I have a Windows machine w/ Linux on a different physical 40 GB hard drive. I love using Linux. Now... my delimma...

I have the option of a brand new 4.2 ghz system and nearly 4 GB of RAM, custom-built, but it won't run Windows. The processor is apparently incompatible with it. It WILL however, run Linux. Sweet B-)

I have a Windows laptop, with a 2.4 GHz processor, but it won't sustain Flight Simulator 2004 which I do quite often. So ... now my question:

I only have room for 1 desktop computer. How can I run Windows (alongside Linux... using a boot menu like I do now), but still use this new system?

Any advice appreciated, thanks,
-Matt

If I was going to fork out the money for a new 4.2Ghz/4GB machine I think I'd just buy one that runs both windows and linux. What processor is apparently incompatible? It's either an x86, or it's not, or perhaps your being scammed.

If your CPU won't run windows then to run windows on it you will need to emulate an x86 cpu. There is no boot menu solution to this, since the boot menu only tells the CPU what to to boot.

If you're talking about a PPC then you might want to look at OSX and Virtual PC.

No, no ... a friend is offering one of his extra ones to me. I know him well and trust him...

Is 4.2Ghz even possible without o/cing? I don't see why it wouldn't run Windows unless (as mentioned earlier) it's a PPC or similar.

PPC? Wazzat? O.o lol

Btw, I'll be using RedHat Linux 9 Enterprise. It has Grub. I also have Knoppix if I need to use it ;)

Ever considered a more recent RedHat release (or CentOS/Fedora)? Personally, I prefer Gentoo.

Nah... I prefer this version, but thanks...

I doubt it's a PPC at those speeds, PPC generally run behind x86 in terms of clock speed... It is a newer 64bit chip? If so, it will run windows fine... Infact I can't think of any chip manufacturer for the PC market that won't run w/ windows... that would be suicide for the manufacturer..

But you answered your own question (if all the facts are straight, which I doubt they are):
How can I run Windows (alongside Linux... using a boot menu like I do now), but still use this new system?

You can't, because:

I have the option of a brand new 4.2 ghz system and nearly 4 GB of RAM, custom-built, but it won't run Windows. The processor is apparently incompatible with it.

It's a custom-built PPC, designed for Linux only. Has Ubuntu already on it, I've just learned.

I guess I can't put Windows on it... thanks all anyway.

Don't get me wrong, from a technical point of view I love the PPC. But I really suggest you do your homework before you buy. It may sound cool to get a โ€œcustom builtโ€, โ€œ4.2โ€, etc system, but you just don't know what you are getting into.

Do you know that it's a lie that the machine won't run Windows? It will. It will run old versions of windows NT. Microsoft dropped support for the PPC several years ago. Just like Apple has announced they are going to do. In a few years all PPC machines may be custom built, because all the big boys may have dumped it.

Think twice before blowing all your money on a Betamax VCR.

Okay, I should mention it is free -_- I trust the guy, I've known him for 4 years with hardly any reason NOT to trust him. He wanted it so that it didn't run Windows.

Well if it's free then you can't complain. I doubt you'll get acceptable performance for 3D games like MSFS in a virtualizer, but aside from 3D and video you find acceptable performance running windows apps. For a flight simulator you might want to take a look at X-Plane. It's not a game but it's as much fun as MSFS and runs on a PPC.

IT WILL RUN WINDOWS ! and 4,2 ghz genuine system doesn't exist (it must be overclocked)
How much your friend makes you pay for that ?
