I have a domain name I got back in the early days of the net.

It's a common surname, and the name of several large business and schools.

I hate to, but I need to sell it.

I've contacted one of the large companies that has made me offers in the past, but I'm unsure of how to get the best price for it.

I can do it casually, contacting organizations and accepting offers personally. Or put it on sedo (the 10% commission sounds rather steep though on something that can go over $100,000, I need every penny I can get from it), ebay? (don't know how much commission they would take). Then tell any interested parties it's available there?

How is something like this done? I don't have experience with this type of thing, so any advice/tips from a pro would be appreciated.

Don't try ebay for a High end name, that's all I know.. You are going to pay a commission to someone, no matter what venue you sell it at.. Sedo seems like a safe place for a high end name, despite their commission...

I would list it at Sedo and direct potential bidders to it, followed by accepting offers and starting an auction with the highest offer.

Good luck. :]

There are not many domains selling for $100K in this economy. Unless the domain is something ridiculous I don't see that happening for a surname.

Listing on eBay is a bad idea. Most domainers with money don't buy on eBay limiting the ceiling.

I doubt you will get the price you are looking for on SEDO either, since that is normally resellers buying domains.

If the name is that premium your best bet might be contacting some of the top brokers who deal with end users. That is the only place you will be able to get a price you are looking for more than likely.

I would either send it to auction at Sedo and let all interested parties know so they can bid or just communicate back and forth with every interested party privately. You will save the commission (but still have to pay an escrow fee) doing it privately. However you will probably make up more than the difference in using Sedo as it will be more automated and put more pressure on the parties to place a bid.

If it's a real premium it could make it to the next greatdomains.com auction.

Thank you all for your ideas and thoughts on this.

After reading through these, I think I will pursue it as a private sale, rather than an auction.

Thanks again, very much :)

I also suggest so. Don't forget to check the TM before reaching the potential buyers.

Wish you the best luck!

You probably want to go the route of looking for a broker that specializes in premium names (even better if they have some contacts in your niche).
