I was just reading a UK pc magazine called .net.

In the magazine they have dotted about some stats on what seem to be random things and 1 of them this months was a claim that only 57% of *.uk domain names are actually associated with a website.

If these claims are correct (and going by how many nominet claim to be registered HERE) that would mean that 2,242,610 domain names are either not hosted anywhere OR are currently parked pages. further more of the domain that are currently registered 40% are used for business purposes (roughly 1,189,105).

Now just thing that 2,242,610 *.uk domain names are not getting used or are in the hands of resellers. I just wonder how many of these domain names are premium names (ie excellent keywords/short domains etc). I should imagine the problem is alot worse with extensions such as .com but have not seen any statistics on this.

1 thing that this demonstrates is the huge amount of people that speculate in the domain market.

What are your thought about this?

Do you think that this poses a problem in the domain market, essentially because of the lack of good names the end result could be other extensions being opened up to cater for the demand for names which essentially would lower the price of domain names people have on the market.

Do you think organisations such as nominet should try and combat this with methods such as if a domain is not used for x amount of time it is reintroduced into the system.

The recent info I read regarding .coms and .nets is pretty much the same: 36% either parked or not used.

I don't believe that speculation is a problem; however, excessive speculation usually precedes a problem.
