American Universities

Hi everyone. Thought I'd pop in to say hi! (it's been a while) and ask a question.

It's always been an ambition of mine to move to the US relatively soon after i finished my university studies in the UK but I came across the idea that it might be worth going over to do postgrad studies to me a better idea about committing to the move and such like.

The gist of the thread; I was looking at university costs over with you guys and it seems very, very expensive. ($50,000 for a year of postgrad?) Either I'm getting it totally wrong and not understanding the American university system or it really is that expensive?

I was looking at Linguistics postgrad courses in the California area, if possible, though obviously although that's where I'd love to end up, I'd be happy studying elsewhere if it's significantly cheaper yet still a high quality university. (to put it into retrospect, I'm currently studying at the 3rd best university in the UK for my particular course)

Any help would be great. Thanks!

It's expensive. You can defray the costs by getting grants and scholarships. Or maybe a university would be interested in a Welsh language instructor? (It never hurts to play up whatever you've got.)

If you choose well-known, popular university which is expensive you have more chances to get perfect education. The better is your education - the bigger are your chances to make a successful career! So, your costs will be recompensed!

As I recall, Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana has a pretty strong Linguistics program. I do not know their costs, overall, but graduate studies are usually pretty expensive. Grad students often end up getting jobs as assistant instructors, though.

Being in the midwest, it might be a bit less expensive than California.

It does look that way! The university system over here I do believe is the same admission prices for universities throughout the country, so that's what confused me a little as I didn't realise the system was that different over there at higher level education.

I'd love to say I was a fluent Welsh speaker, but I'm not. It could be worth looking into learning it as a seperate module on my course if it did make a difference though.

True and that's the big debate, whether it is worth the costs. Hard decisions to be made, I feel!

That's great, thanks. It definitely seems a lot cheaper there; $14,000 instead of $30,000+ per annum it seems, unless I'm getting confused! I was looking at paying no more than $15,000 a year for postgrad study.

Is there by any chance a student loan system over there, like in the UK? I know as an international student I would have to show I could financially support myself, but I know international students here can access a student loan fund.

[Thanks for all the help / advice so far guys, much appreciated]

I know a student counselor over there, I do not believe she has retired yet, I'll get her email address and forward it to you, she could answer a lot of questions for you about how you can pay your way or scholarships you can apply for, etc.

Indiana is a great place, and Bloomington in particular is exceptional, it is a nice community.

I was thinking about moving to America to study Business

I had two choices

Either

1) Stay in Scotland and get paid to go to Uni

or

2) Go to Uni in America and pay $25,000 fees

Would love to stay in America at some point but the fees charged for foreigners to study there are unbelievable!

You Scots do get it easy ;) We get the nicer weather though!
You'd have to pay for Masters though, I'm sure? So there's less of a difference there.
