How to get around this...

Hello there,

I am new at this forum, and I want to start with the following question, please!

I'm studying at some university and the problem is that our computer center administrator has restricted our internet access only to the website of our university, so we can't open any website but the one of our university (I think he uses some firewall software or maybe other software on the main server...I don't know). So how can I get around this to access other websites? (I don't mean inappropriate websites, but websites like Google, Yahoo, Hotmail...etc, that we are not able to access)
I always hear about that proxy thing, but I have no idea what a proxy is! Can I use it to get around our server? How? Any useful tricks?

I am using IE v6... (the one that comes with win-xp sp2).

What is a proxy? How do I use it?... (I'm a beginner at this) :?

Seems like a waste of money of having the internet if your only allowed to use the university website.

in our school we're paying the internet so we get to access all the sites we wanted...well except "those" restricted ones...

Thanks microdude431! but I can't find the option to use a proxy under connections tab in internet options... Could it be disabled somehow or maybe located somewhere else in "internet options"?

Yea i also have this problem at my school, but im not in university :D and i also have no clue what proxies are

you wont be able to use a proxy. there group policy would have removed the options and you will be a proxy buy your system administrators which is applied when you logon.

I don't get it, adam_uk! You mean there is no way I can use a proxy? Isn't there any other way?
