It's not just Swetha making solid sales with .xyz. Today Algo.xyz sold for $50,000 at Sedo. The domain name was registered in 2015 and looks like the same registrant who registered it is the seller. Algo registered in 452 extensions according to DOTDb.com. Algo is now tied with Move.xyz and Alliance.xyz for the 13th highest reported .xyz sale of all time. … [Read more...]

Hi

so, if i hand-regged a name, and then registered it in 450 other extensions...
how much would it cost me
and would my .xyz or .com be worth $50K?

you think i can exploit or manipulate, the "number of extensions taken" metric, by doing this?

imo....

"Algo" is crypto, around 30th in market cap. It might make sense to the right buyer being a Web3 related term, but look at the re-seller prices for .XYZ on venues like NamePros and others. Quality LLL and other single word terms are trading for almost nothing.

Random sales like this are just outliers. It is hard to build a business on those.

In a large enough pool, any random domain can sell if the likelihood is low enough. It is kind of like winning the lottery.

These type of markets are completely different than .COM. If you can consistently make money with a much smaller buyer pool, more power to you.

Couldn't agree more @bmugford

However, I still dabble in things I know I shouldn't (haha)

What a great sale, helps bring light to xyz.. worth it? Prolly not, am I glad it happened? Certainly.

What xyz needs to do is expand its market beyond crypto, NFT and Web3 to include travel, transportation, signage, education, science and communication. The potential is huge.

The names which are trading for reseller prices are tagged with premium renewal prices. If they have normal renewal prices they would be grabbed already.

imho

Yep, it just makes a large swath of potentially appealing domains unappealing.

It is also a good reason why it is hard to replicate your business model. You have a large portfolio of strong terms with standard renewal fees.

When it comes to VR/Meta worlds it could include everything. Crypto>NFT>Web3>Metaverse/Virtual Reality.

Isn't Swetha's situation simply a case of first mover advantage?

When others were criticizing xyz (rightly/wrongly) or on the fence, Swetha took a gamble early on and bought and held names for years before success came. By the time her sales flowed, the xyz registry quite understandably capitalized by increasing prices and renewals for remaining popular terms. Now some are complaining about high renewal fees like this was never going to happen.

This is not much different from how Nikul bought good one word .cos before the registry also set premium prices.

Just sometimes, it's possible to reap the benefits of moving fast and early into an emerging area, while others sit on the sidelines scratching their heads at it all.

Sure. I agree.

I was just pointing out it is hard to replicate the business model when so many terms now have been "premium" registration/renewals.

If anything I was giving her credit for a business model that is not easily replicated.

This issue can be seen on NamePros with some absolutely amazing terms in .XYZ. I can think of a (3) letter term I saw with a premium renewal. The term would sell for $10M+ in .COM and didn't sell for $10K in .XYZ because of that premium renewal.

The "premium" renewals are toxic when it comes to domain investment. The registry has essentially walled off large amounts of quality domains.

If you own quality terms at standard renewals, you have a chance. It is hard to replicate that now.

without taking sides

xyz making higher prices had zero to do with swetha

tho I do believe she got Roses from xyz owners for putting her sales everywhere and good publicity for xyz in this way

Hi

not only what you said above Brad,
but some names that had regular renewal fee, which have expired.... now have premium renewal, if caught via backorder or auction.

it's basically same thing .co registry started doing with some expired names.

imo...

I have been following their premium list since 2015. They did not change their premium renewal names or renewal fees.(Except random 3L.xyz )

The amount of registration and renewals tiers .XYZ has is absurd.

You have "premium" registration fees that vary, then standard renewal -

https://gen.xyz/blog/new-premium-tiers

"Buy It Now" .xyz premiums with $10 renewals!

What's the deal? Domains in these three tiers have a premium price the first year, but renew at XYZ's standard, always affordable, low-cost of $10. So, whether you’re a startup looking to brand on an especially short or highly valuable keyword domain or a domain investor looking to get your hands on premium .xyz names, this new set of premium tiers allows you to renew your premium domains at an even more affordable price!

The registration fees are $3000 / $700 / $350

This is not to be confused with the domains that come with "premium" registration AND renewal fees. These premium renewals also vary, but I have seen prices up to $55K/year.

As an investor, I am not interested in this variable registration/renewal fee plan. It limits the buyer pool and makes it confusing for everyone involved.

Again, you can see how toxic this is when it comes to resale and a term that would sell for $10M+ in .COM is not selling for $10K in .XYZ, with a low $XXXX renewal fee attached.

For the record, These are some good keyword.xyz names deleted and registered back since May 2021. If the registry wanted to grab,They would have kept some hefty renewal fees.

Probably not quite the same but back in 2005 I went against the market and bought 900 plus .co.in and thereafter was selling them on almost a daily basis for a year or two. Average sale I guess was high $xxx, made quite a killing relative to that period of time.

Can barely give away premium keyword .co.in nowadays. Hopefully .xyz will not suffer the same fate.

BTW The only xyz I own is not - VerseXYZ.com :xf.smile:

Did not see any value in the .xyz extension, and most definitely not the first thing I have got wrong.:xf.grin:

Late December 2021, router .xyz sold via BIN for $1799. No biggie, it was close to 15x ROI

Been away from the game for a while and really not upto date with all the buzz (if you can call it that).

Guessing it was another investor as it's currently sitting on a $25k BIN tag.

Kudos to him/her.

Yeah a lot were still available last year even on expired auction. I remember having cubism.xyz in my namecheap auction bookmarks in late November 2021..

Forgot to bid and it ended with 0 bids, expired and got registered by someone. This kind of name now will sell for 4 figures at Sav auction..

I saw that picasso.xyz sold at Dan recently but I'm not sure the price. Likely for a lot as it's a crypto brand using it..
