Alexa Rank - What actually is it?

I have been wondering about this for a while now as i have been looking at my domains stats. One of my names has an alexa rank of 4.5 million. is this good? I checked some major sites and they have a very low alexa rank? Why is this?

Low the rank the better. If your webpage is ranked 4.5 million, that means there are 4,499,999 sites that have more "traffic" than yours. Remember, alexa is just a guide and actual traffic may be different.

the lower the better, 4.5 mill isnt very good

its a traffic indicator but only traffic which has alexa toolbar installed is counted so its very much weighted

ie sites orientated towards webmasters will have lower alexa rank as the visitors are more likely to have alexa toolbar installed

overall alexa rank is pretty useless in determining value of a domain

ive got a site with less than 400k alexa

So those sites with no alexa rank (i.e. zero) are even higher than 4.5 million then?

yep no alexa rank means is worse than having one, ie gets less traffic than your 4.5mill

I have question about refereshing alexa ranking, always it's refreshed every max. 7 days.
I haven't refreshed this near one month, where can be reason?

My position from one month is 1,7 mln~

i wonder how alexa counts your site when you have no alexa tracker on your site ? i think sites using an alexa tracker are better placed in the rank, what you think ?

Alexa was down for a good portion of yesterday. I have noticed they have not updated stats in about the last 8 days. I'm not sure what the delay is, but I would expect the stats to be updated in the near future.

When you install the Internet Explorer it contains some files of Alexa (some people refer to it as a type of "spyware") . If you don't uninstall it it sends data to Alexa and that is how they compile their lists . You can easily uninstall the files with most anti-spywares (eg. Ad-Aware -freeware-) . Therefore , more seasoned surfers (who usually scan their systems regularly and possibly have uninstalled the Alexa files) usually don't send any data to Alexa . It does not need an Alexa toolbar for them to track hits , those files in the IE are enough . I don't think having an Alexa rank or stats button in a site influences the results . If there is also an Alexa tracker (besides the rank or stats button) that someone can add to his site , then it would probably affect the Alexa rank since it would track all visitors and not only the ones with the Alexa files .






No rank means that the site has not been crawled (and probably that it does not have extreme traffic otherwise Alexa would have received a lot of hits and crawled it) . You can manually submit your site here if you want .
