I got an e-mail by a non GoDaddy registrar asking me to submit a request to opt in one of my domain names into Afternic listing service. The domain is listed on GD auctions. My questions are:

1. This can be legit?
2. It means that someone wants my domain?

Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Yes it would only be legit if you listed the domain names for sale via Afternic. If you did not someone else is trying to list your domain for sale and we are asking you in that email if you want to list them for sale. It is a confirmation if it is coming from your registrar saying it looks like you want to list it, confirm this by agreeing. If you did list the names for sale that is great if not contact afternic support at [email protected] and say you are not listing the domains and they will fix it.
Either way this does not mean someone wants to buy your domain names. That email we send tells you we have an offer.

While searching, i found that the name was listed to Aftenic by previous owner. Not from me.
Then do NOT click on the link in the e-mail from your registrar. As Joe wrote, send an e-mail to Afternic support and ask them to remove the listing

Joe - if you delete your cookies/history or visit afternic from another browser, the afternic site would not forward http to https. First time visitors are not forwarded to https @ afternic. It is really strange that this issue, which is known since at least last year, was never fixed.

Joe, I stated that there is a SSL certificate for Afternic. That isn't the issue. The issue is that the HTTP protocol does NOT automatically redirect users to the HTTPS protocol site.
I kept looking into this and we were able to find a way to get it to not forward to the ssl automatically and sent up a ticket to the developers on it. Thanks everyone for all the screenshots and information you provided to help troubleshoot it. It certainly helped because I couldn't get it to do it on my end.

Update: After receiving relative e-mail, I will soon be paid by selling party! After that, I will reveal the price and the domain to domain sales section. What an adventure!

Don't forget to list your names there, It is highly recommended. Always check if your domain is previously listed and ask for fixing. Thanks again to Afternic support and to @Joe Styler personally.

its only legit if ti comes from registrar where that given domain is stored.

aftrnic cannot send you optin emails from gd for domains which are not regged at gd.

its just from whereever your domains are regged.

I'm frightened to enable that fast transfer service, as it doesn't seem to be monitored very well. It seems to allow front-runners and scammers to list names they don't own.

Very fundamental question: Did you even list the domain on Afternic? Did you set a BIN price?
If you did list, search for the domain on Afternic and go to it's sales page. If it lists it under your username, then yes, it is legit. After what @Kuffy experienced, be very careful of enabling fast transfer on Afternic

Just went to log in into my Afternic account as I received a price enquiry and found this

NOT GOOD AT ALL!
Install this extension always - https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
This automatically redirects connections to the https if it exists. Afternic does support SSL connections but they stupidly also don't force it!

Edit: I went and checked and unfortunately, even the extension linked above does not contain a ruleset to redirect Afternic pages to the ssl versions. That's definitely not good

I have a couple of security addons as well but ALL of Afternic still shows without https and non-secure.
It would be good if @Joe Styler replied to this issue as well.

Could you log in Anantj?

Oh my God. The link seems to be legit. It was from ICAAN. I think that i understand now what is happening:
As i searched, the domain was still listed to Afternic by previous owner. Now the buyer bought the domain name via Afternic and asked me to transfer. But, how i can get paid if i didn't list it there? Can anyone from Afternic help? @Joe Styler can you help me about this situation?

I am pretty sure that finally it is not a scam because:

1. The e-mail address seems to be from Exabytes.
2. The link was from domainadmin.com and seems legit as searched for. See this
3. The domain name was listed in Afternic.

Well, what a mess. I need help!

Guys care out there, you don't know who is the sender of each e-mail. It seems finally i lost the domain name. Examine well before open this type of messages. My story must be our lesson (including me of course).

Still now, all case is under investigation. But i told you above what is happening. I suspect that's not a domain steal, but a big confusion. Having hundreds of names, how to know if it was listed on Afternic by previous owner? Currently i don't use afternic as selling place.

Yesterday the domain name it was listed on Afternic. As seeing now, the domain name is deleted from their marketplace.

THE BIG QUESTION IS: IF THE NAME WAS SOLD, IN WHAT PRICE? I CAN BE PAID OR JUST LOOKING THE DOMAIN NAME BE IN THE HANDS OF THE NEW OWNER WITHOUT TAKING EVEN A DOLLAR?

Have you asked support what happened? If you reach out to [email protected] they can look into what happened.

They should reply soon. The support team does not work on Sunday and they are probably getting all caught up today.

Thanks guys. I want to ask, it is a possible sale on the road or just it's a common practice? I ask because i accepted it for another name before some days.

Godaddy is just asking your permission to list your name at Afternic. That is it. There is no guarantee that listed domain will be sold nor it has any enquiry for it.

Thank you very much for taking care of it. It's very professional attitude by your side. At start, it was hard to decide from whom to ask for assistance. My first thought was "scam" but it was not. I got a 1st reply by afternic support and wait for the complete solution.

After all this, damn, I will definitely set for sale all my portfolio to afternic. :)

Yes, it came from the registrar where the domain is registered.
