The Guardian reports that eBay's marketing research suggests billions of dollars in Google advertising have been largely negligible on sales.

It depends. If your company already ranks #1, then it's unnecessary to buy advertising.

But for local businesses, I have seen countless examples where searching for:

Doesn't come up as #1 result. It is important that the doctor advertise for his name and business if he doesn't capture top rankings.
