My bid of $1000 wasn't nearly enough, the highest initial bid was: $5,100.00.

You may be right. I would think if you were shelling out that much money for a domain you would be smart enough to have a pretty good idea no TM issues come into play.

GulfAir.com was dropping recently but got renewed at the last minute, this name is trademarked by the airways but the current owner of it advertises air freshner on a crappy site. I would of thought that a company like Gulf Air would of took them to court if they could, but they are using it for a different purpose. gulfair.com receives 722 with ext in overture - and I don't think its people looking for air freshner LOL
