a1.com dropped last night..

a1.com dropped last night on snap names...

Currently the bids are up to $5,853.00 with almost 3 days left.
My bid of $1000 wasn't nearly enough, the highest initial bid was: $5,100.00.

I'm not sure who's crazier - the guy who let it drop or the guy who pays 6 figs for it. It's a nice name and all, but c'mon ... unless the new owner gets a lucky offer from the A1 steak sauce people, it will take 42 years to get his money back ...

Domains drop due to lots of reason may be credit card expired, unexpected dead of the owner various other reason so who knows why good domains drop but they do drop. SNAPNAMES mostly and Registra are making good killing $$$$$$. Currently snapnames is hot in getting all the great domains names.
Also i think frequent bidders like saggydimes aka buydomains.com, vaxis etc have changed their username. Because I won't tell you why......

What would be even funnier is if A1 sues the new registrant, takes the domain, and the registrant/auction winner is out >$100k.

Definitely the guy who let it drop.

I am sure it is because if they are known too well, people know who they are and will bid them up.

Yeah but any good name like that should be paid for 10 years at a time. That's just foolishness ...

Anyone have a final price on the auction yet?

Yeah kind of like how tons of people are asking silly $$$ for food related .us names ever since Rick D started buying them up. You just never know though what the other guy is doing. I've overpayed for things that I really wanted, and didn't think twice about it. Last year I overpaid big time for a name that I wanted for a site I was developing. I'm sure the seller was laughing all the way to the bank. Then I sold the site 8 months later for more money than he'll probably make in the next 25 years. Sometimes everyone wins ...

It's a small market and if someone is buying everything up, prices naturally jump.

That is what is termed as monoply and people become richers in monolopy ( the big fish only ) and rest just sit around. Same is the case with major domains. Big fish never gives a smaller fish any chance.

Also I noticed some of this bidder like saggydimes vaxis would pay ridiculous amount of money for domains name that are not even worth spending registration fee. They do this just because they are in auction and they want to create a psychology fear in the auction "DON'T MESS WITH ME" . Some times i wonder what are they thinking!!!!!
For example vaxis paid almost $11,000 for a .net domain name with 15 letters. I won the similar name a week later with exact main keyword 8 letter for $60.00.
Another crazy bidder i won't name it its doing same thing I think he is owner of a parking space company and its bidding over the top $xx,xxx for domain name which are not worth more than $xxx.
No doubt they all are making tons of money so they are more expert than me. But DOMAIN AUCTION is more becoming like immature sports where the bidder just bid to show others they are powerful and mighty. I think their is better way to spend money instead "DONATE"

You would have had to been on crack if you let a domain like a1.com drop!

There are loads of gems like this dropping everyday, I also think many of them come from big portfolio owners that don't manage to do a good job of keeping track on 300,000 domain renewals !!!! Also when a company has multiple domains pointing to thier website when they drop they are less likely to notice as their website would not go down.

I did'nt think this would go past $60 to $70,000 but i'ts a great name and could be used for many things.

What was the final price ?

It just reinforces that you need to know who your potential buyer is. Do research... This is also another reason why some of the bidders are changing their usernames so they can possibly get domains at a lower price.

Fonzie it won't make any difference because remember the top players are always bidding with each other so sooner or latter they would be back to same game. I think they need to have some common sense and if they have so much money than DONATE some :).

Do people know where these guys get the money to bid this high? I would think few people would be able to pay that much money for a domain and not either resell or put it into use making $ immediately. I am sure these guys still buy domains from resellers though. It seems like they could get better prices on some of these domains from resellers than they could from bidding each other up on auctions in the aftermarket.

That is no reason for spending 100,000. These people do it because it will be worth around $500,000-100,000 in a few years when almost all the good domains are gone. Like for example, a1.com would have been only around $1000 five years back.

How are people getting around the TM issues with A1.com? I wouldn't think it is that generic of a term to not have TM laws apply.

Isn't A1 about as generic as you can get? Look in any phonebook and you'll find 1000 businesses that start with A1 ...
