A question about domain names and Google

how important is the domain name for Google?
if I had the same website with a very relevant domain name will it be indexed better than the same website with irrelevant domain?

having a relevant domain name helps a little bit with ranking, but doesn't make a difference in terms of indexing.

what I dont understand is why domain names are so important if it helps just a little bit in the ranking.

domain names are the name of your website, the address, and often times plays a key role in defining what your website is about, and by itself can generate traffic too (type-ins).

consider the difference between security.org to security-supplies-and-alarms.biz... the latter might be better for search engines, but i'd rather have security.org.

I have 300 of them, so i know...
just trying to make sure how important the name is for SE ranking.
it doesn't make sense to me that the SE doesn't give too much weight for the name, but again, I dont know too much about SEO.

i know it is not popluar keyword, but only an example

if your domain name contains the target keyphrase that was searched on it helps a little. Check out seomoz site for complete list of what search engines take into account.
