Hi all,

:hi:

I have been contacted by a huge corporation which holds a arguable monopoly in the world in the field of computers and related operating systems.

I have a domain name which is a .com extension which they are seeking and have effectively tried to reach my number atleast 2 times now. I do not want to name the domain name in general intrest of the deal but just wanted to know how much should I ask for the domain name assuming that the company is very very very huge and they want to deal straight away.....

Lets us say if the domain was windows.com and the company was microsoft....just an example

there is no trademark issue as the company has not launched the product relating to the name and I am still running a nice site which receives decent 1000 uniques a day....

lets not jump to conclusions without knowing the name. For all you know, the name might not be as important as it sounds.

I am still speculating as the offer i received is via a small reseller and on my first refusal i saw the bigger picture..
First off, if the company is not contacting you directly, how do you know "The Company" wants the domain name? I think this is speculation on your part and you just might loose a sale because of it.

If "The Company" wanted the domain, they would use a domain broker or somebody in-house to cover themself. I am wondering what you are considering the "Small Reseller" is this a Retailer?

Personally, I would hold it, and just wait for a high offer. If they want it, they will come calling. If your really smart, in the sale, keep some royalties and take 0.05% of all sales for 5-10 years and the up front money ;)

I'd start out at $1,000,000. Which is peanuts for them and they obviously want to design a product around your name, or have already done so.

I like the way you think! I agree. I look at it as the domain name/site is the store "virtual store" Okay how much does a store like TARGET, Walmart, Macy's pay for the actual store to be built? A WHOLE LOT! Well, the Virtual store/site that is going to be the landing point for all customers of a major corporations product/service shouldn't be valued any differently. It should be and is worth a whole lot which is easily in the hundreds of thousands to millions of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Is your name really windows.com quality though?
Windows.com is worth a couple of hundred $ thousand without MSFT traffic - as windows repair business. Add to that thousands of people a day searching for MSFT windows, a percentage of those would remember windows.com as windows repair business when they need it, and windows.com value is $ half a million to a million, and that's without displaying any MSFT ads. So if MSFT wanted to buy windows.com, the price should be several $ million, as you could get a $ million from someone else.

If your name is purplestone.com quality, then your options are a lot more limited. You should still get $ several hundred thousand to a million if the buyer is MSFT and they are very motivated.

If the buyer is Mickeysoft, then you have to be very careful. Look at the owner of Zune.com. Imagine being in that guy's shoes. He can't offer to sell the name to M'soft, the name has been devalued because no buyer in their right mind would buy it now, and he can't even park the damned thing because all the ads would be for M'soft's Zune (a big no-no). Even if he did park it with unrelated ads, his CTR would be dismal because everyone is expecting the official Zune page. All because M'soft did the unthinkable by bypassing him and buying the .net!

The Zune.com domain goes nowhere when you type it in. Does anyone know the whole story, btw? I'm assuming the owner refused to sell for less than several million $ and M'soft said funk you.

Another good argument for buying the other five main tlds when a big company comes callin for your dotcom.

So, who says BIG corps/companies do not use .NETs...

true, you could end up in the Zune situation.

But you mentioned that you already have a developed website on it. Furthermore, the .net has also been taken by some other guy. the company will have to buy either of them (the .net or the .com). And even if they don't buy it, your existing website would see increased traffic and you wouldn't have any trouble, provided you do not display the TM ads

A quick update !

I got two calls today from a gentleman from the company (so now its official) inviting me to a sponsored trip to sydney (their headquaters) to discuss the deal further. I have already received the tickets within an hour of his call and he mentioned that they wouldn't mind If I had a partner along.

Also he gave an immediate second call when he requested that to maintain the integrity and general intrest of the deal not to discuss the name and the product whatsoever in the internet community. I think they have already noticed (Namepros you rock)....

Anyways I will be flying to sydney in a weeks time and will come back and give a quick update to all the fellows who have pmed me in regards to the deal....

I also thank everyone for their suggestions and honest arguments and in case this deal occurs (which is a high probability) you might as well see or read about it in a months time....

I request the moderators to please close this thread....

reputations added to all on your wonderful advices...

Truely I mean no offense by this, but if you were an absolute pro, you wouldn't be asking for advice here on how to proceed.

I opened this thread because I wanted them to know that they are talking to no novice...They will have to chew hard steel if they want the domain.... :$: :)

I wanted them to notice that I am a full time domainer and wont sit on the fish bait....

Also I have refused a IN house meeting....Meaning I will be meeting them at some neutral point with only 2 people on each side....I never liked IN house meetings. They always meant I want what I want coz this is my house .... :hehe:

I was thinking HALO4.COM until he mentioned Sydney. Hmm, who is headquartered in Sydney and big in computers and operating systems? Anyone?

Did the company make an offer? I'm not sure by what you've said if they did. In any case, why set a price first? Why not talk to them...tell them how you see the domain as being very important to them....and tell them to make their best offer. If you don't like it, you now have a basis to counter. They want it; you've got it. You call the shots.

Also, think in terms of things in addition to money....free software for life, etc.

You can buy us all a beer when you return.

it has to be pretty amazing though. A company flying you all the way to Sydney to make a domain deal. That simply indicates that they really wanna talk business and the name is really important to them.
