.xyz is popular because of its cheap regisration price many years ago. Expensive TLDs will kill them self, not growing in popularity. .com was cheaper than .net and .org, that's why it is better in use. $2,499 regisration and renewal fee is crazy even for big car dealers, which don't even know there is .car domain name
