Periodically I check domain counts internet statistics to see trends in .COM and other major TLD registrations. They used to show the renewals and deletions and for about two years now .Info registrations have been on the decline. It was always guess as to the number of .TV registrations. Apparently they changed the format today but their tool says... "...For Registry's publishing a domain count, "Our Count" should closely match their published record. For registry's that don't provide a zone file or publish an up-to-date record, Our Count represents all domains we know about, which is usually more accurate..."

So the figure they show currently is about 597k .TV registrations.

That figure is less than .MOBI, .US, .CO, .ES .BIZ & .EU

You did a cross-zone analysis against the .com zone file ?
Personally I was expecting something between 500K and 1M. The figures look plausible.

I just pulled the number off their report but this is the first time I have ever seen Whois reporting .TV registration stats. 600k sounds reasonable given the number of drops. With more registrations, there are more drops. However, even lowly .INFO is still kicking .TVs ___

That is surprising that .tv has less registrations than .mobi. I really would have thought enough people had fled .mobi that there would be fewer registrations.

I wonder how many actual developed .mobi sites there are, and how many of the registrations are simply defensive in nature, where the .com owner just felt a need to register and renew to prevent 'squatters' on a brand.

While it is easy to criticize the new TLDs as being very limited in how many keywords make sense with the extension, even .TV investors must admit .TV does not make sense with just any keyword. As well, you don't need a .TV domain to put video on a website.

I think the renewal fees draws the registrations back as it comparatively higher than most other extensions.

I am surprised its not lower than 597K and it may be, I remember listening to a Verisign conference call where a Merrill Lynch analyst asked for .TV reg numbers, the CEO replied nothing substantial, way under 1 million.

Well if you can have a modest level of registrations but have decent sale prices perhaps that is due to people wanting just strong keywords and only in certain extensions. .Me domains are re-sellable but have a lower registration level than info or mobi.
