3-year strategy for 3-letter and 4-number domains

Hi,

For 3-letter domains (.com, .net, .org, .info, .us) and

3-character domains (.com)

4-number domains (.com, .net, .org, .info, .us)

what would your strategy be? Hold for (say) 3 -years because values are expected to rise or sell soon?

Hello,

Great Question!

As far as the 3 letter domains go in all top extensions, I see every reason to hold. Values are still on the rise at a sharp percentage and there seems to be no pressure at the moment to do anything to slow down the rise. If anything, as more 3 letter domains fall into end-user hands, supply shrinks and prices will continue to grow strongly.

In regards to 3 character .com domains, I too see strong growth for them. 3 character domains are a little trickier to call, though, as combo type can play a big role in valuation, but if you have a good 3 character, I see no reason it's value won't continue to increase behind the 3 letter combos.

My background in 4 number domains is not too extensive, but for my 2 cents I do imagine they have good future potential too. This said, there are many 4 number domains still available outside of .com and .net, so until the rest are bought out in the other top extensions, values will likely retain a steady, but slower growth.

I look forward to others thoughts on this one!

Thanks,
Zesty

I don't know about which of those domains are best to get but I like the strategy of buying domains and listing them for 2-5 times the price I paid for them straight away. Based on my sales and the domains I pick, I think I can maintain a profit, a growing cashflow and a growing collection. The average time I hold domains for looks likely to be less than a year but I've only been doing this for 6 months. (I was in profit earlier but I increased my budget last month.)

All 3 letter domains in .com, .net, .org, .info, and .us are registered. I don't see these going down in value. You could hold them, or flip them now for some quick money. If I were own some and I didn't need money, I would hold them at least for a little while.

3-character domains (.com) are also taken. I owned 2 of these, one I flipped for 10 times what I paid for it a week after I got it. The other I still have. I am thinking about holding it for a little bit.

4-number domains (.com, .net, .org, .info, .us) are a bit different, at least with info and us, there are still some available to register. You could hold on to them, but I can see you having to hold on to them for a while before they have any real value.

I'm new to this, what exactly do you mean by flipping? Did you own the domain originally?

I have the two in my sig. In 20 yrs I could be a millionaire, with inflation that would be enough to buy a nice car :)
You want $XX,XXX for both, or each?

Id sell within the next 12 months. Prices seem to be coming to a peak, and i expect a several-year decline in a year or so. This is for everything but .com (and to some degree, .us). If you plan on holding for 5+ years though, then dont change your gameplan. :D

The number of ccTLD's opening is really going to drive prices down, imo. As more of the internet population becomes aware of different domain extensions the .com monopoly is going to vanish. While it'll still be the premier extension, it wont be on top simply because people are oblivious to other TLDs. And i dont think people are going to associate country code TLD with ONLY country-specific information. Most people havent (and wont) memorize which ccTLD stands for which country.

In addition, as the stigma about "non-.com domains" disappears, i think the real value will be in extremely short domains, regardless of extension. a.bc, for example.

all my 4L domains are not for sale. Of course I will take it into consideration if I receive an offer on mine, but actually I'm not interested atm to sell them. I dont have many, though

Aren't most 4L domains worthless anyway? There are still thousands available, even if you remove the "bad" letters. 4N domains are all taken, so they have some value.

Hmmm worthless? It depends on what you consider worthless!

I've sold many 4 letter domains for anywhere from mid $XXX to $2X,XXX over the years. Overall, I've had a much ROI on 4 letters than I have on any other category of domain.

One of the $2x,xxx sales I had was the acronym of a 43 letter long company name (a new division of a very large company). They spend several times that amount in their daily print ads, so it was a worthwhile purchase for them.

43 letter company name. It could be 63 letters long and in a .tk extension, but if its a company name then it will be of worth to the company, and only the company. This example has no relationship to the worth of 4 letter domain names! One off sales like this are bound to happen.
