I recieved this email today.

"Hello,

I'm very interested in this name.

I run a software company. We develop client-server systems and databases in MS SQL and Delphi. Buying and selling domain names is not my main business. Just another way to invest money and make additional income.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Best regards,
xxxx xxxxxxx Ph.D.
CEO
xxx Engineering"

----------------------------------------
The name is "suddendrawpoker.com"
My asking price is $2700.00

May I have your opinion ask to my asking price for this name? He's a reseller it sounds like so I'm wondering if I'll need to drop my price.
The name is a popular video poker game machine in Las Vegas. Thousands of them through out the city and state

Thank you
namenut

Before you go further, stop. The email you received is an appraisal scam. The person emailing you will ask you to get an appraisal from their company, costing you money to give to them, then decline the offer. I received the same email in the past, as have about half of the domain-owning members here. It's easily recognized.

There are many threads providing information on this scam here at NamePros:

Steve :)

P.S. The domain is very long, in my opinion it is worth mid $xx, however, I'm not familiar enough with video poker machines...

No problem! ;) I'm sure someone else would have said something if I didn't catch it, NamePros is a great community. Tell the guy sending you the emails that you previously received a 50-cent offer for the domain. :)

LoL @50cent offer - do it, see what reply you get.

Have to repeat it again... NamePros is great for this - uncovering these stupid scams. Thanks to all the members here for watchin eachothers backs. I've had this done to me in the past and was so very close to falling for it till I read something on these forums and wised up just in time.

I think its good to post here to get some advise on things like this. Not all are scams, but worth being vigilant.

Here is a copy of the second letter I received from the same dude!

5,000 USD. Ok.

Do you have anลกappraisal certificate?
ลก
Domain name is anลกinvestment for me. In other words I'm going to sell your name later and make a profit. If I overpay I won't be able to make a profit in the future. It's very important for you and me to know the current market value of your domain.
ลก
Of course, we must be sure that you are engaging a reputable appraisal company.ลกI heardลกmany appraisal companies often made inaccurate appraisals.ลก I will only accept appraisals from independent sourcesลกI trust.
ลก
If the appraisal comes higher you can adjust your asking price accordingly.ลก I also hope you can give me 10% - 15% discount of the appraised value because I need a room to makeลก profit.

After Iลกget an appraisal from you we'll continue our negotiations.
ลก
To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies in a forum
http://domaintalk.ourplace.com/Archive/69047.htm

How do you prefer to get paid: www.PayPal.com, www.escrow.com, check or wire?
ลก
Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

Looking forward to your reply.

I sent him an email back telling him that I believe he is trying to
scam people as several people have the same story....I also told him I was forwarding his emails to a "higher authority"...for possible fraud connections.
Then I told him to have a nice day...lol

Just an FYI for those who may get a letter as well.
Notice the language conversion?

:)

I have seen this scam in various forms and have noticed one thing:

They usually say a little about what they (supposedly) do for a living and then...
Almost always include the phrase "Buying and selling domain names is not my main business."

Glad someone caught it for you before it was too late.

I did that. I offered my domain for $20 and got no response. 2 Days later I wrote again and said "oops, I left off 3 zeros" - I meant $20k. Immediately got the response email.

We should all band together and spam the crap out of him/them. Hey there's an idea. Create a running thread on these guys and feed their email to all of NP to spam to death. LOL

Received the same email

I received the same email and the same thing he is going to ask for is an appraisal from allprodomains. I send it a member on this forum who cautioned me. Trend carefully.

Thanks

Like I said I got owned, I got owned because they sent me all this and I half way believed it but I actually wanted a appraisal anyways so that kind of just pushed me over the top.

Happened to me a while back. He offered $20k for a name worth around $20, then he wanted an appraisal. I saw that it was too good to be true so I just ignored it and didn't get the appraisal.

I suppose you're missing the reason why it's a scam -- the guy doing it has no life, just sending emails out trying to get people to use his appraisal company then turning the offer away. He doesn't actually buy the domain, just collects on the chance that you take his appraisal.

no I get it trust me =P, you just misinterpreted what I said. I'm saying that he is rich from those appraisals he keeps getting from scamming people so he's going to keep scamming.
