"We need to think about what we can do to protect them and what we can do, eventually, to bring them home with the honor they deserve," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a Maryland Democrat.

"The enormity of this loss of 2,000 of our best and greatest breaks America's heart," said Sen. Dick Durbin, the Democratic whip from Illinois.

He called for America's leaders to redouble their efforts to find a way to end the war.

"We owe our fallen soldiers and their families answers; we owe them accountability," he said. "We can't allow our nation to drift into a war without end in Iraq."

With more than 150,000 troops still in harm's way in Iraq, Durbin said "the choice we face in Iraq is not a choice between resolve and retreat.

The men and women in our military and their loved ones deserve a clear path to stability in Iraq."

He added, "We do not honor our fallen soldiers simply by adding to their numbers."

The death toll is far higher than the 382 U.S. troops who died in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, but lower than the toll from many previous conflicts.

That oil war sucks for sure. But anyways Bush makes huge mistakes that other people pay for them.

What a bunch of idiots - I mean not the soldiers that have bravely defended our freedom but the freaks that make a huge deal out of this.

Do you guys remember that they ran a couple planes into the 2 largest buildings in New York City? (I think they were at least.) What about attacking our national defense with the Pentagon? Oh yeah - about 4,000 died in less than 8 hours that day. This took about 2 and a half years ;)

I say relax and be grateful we still have our freedom to hold on to.

If Bush had not went into Iraq many more people would have been killed. Saddam killed millions, 2000 US deaths is a little to pay to save many more.

If the USA and UK pulled out now there would be many killings in Any Town USA/UK/AU/etc....

This is sad to hear :( but you also shouldn't forget the tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi bystanders killed by the bombing/terrorist attacks on the US.

From the Iraq Body Count: a Dossier of Civilian Casualties:
โ€“ 24,865 civilians were killed in the last two years, almost all by violence.
โ€“ 82% of those killed were adult males and 9% were adult women.
โ€“ Nearly one in ten of those killed were under the age of 18.
โ€“ Nearly one in two hundred of those killed were a baby aged 0-2.
โ€“ Most adult victims were parents leaving behind orphans and widows.
โ€“ Among the adult victims (18 or over) females constitute 9.6% of deaths.
โ€“ Among fewer than 18s, the proportion of females killed rose to 22.7%.

Dont get me wrong. 2000 men/women dead is not fun but we are saving a country and keeping the terror attacks out of the USA and other countries these non-humans hate. I would rather the USA/UK take the fight to them then have them in our countries killing our civilians.

terrorist attacks?

Wake up my friends.

They are filling your mind with crap. Media is owning us so badly.

Terrorist Attacks come from people in danger. From desperates. And nobody knows who are the real heads moving the war machine.

USA may have captured a criminal, but they destroyied a country and caused the death of thousands of people. And they are telling You this was for a good cause.

Like in crusades 1000 years ago... the good cause is to steal virtual enemies' richness. THEN, they become terrorists.

If my family was killed by a stranger commando not knowing what it's doing, I would probably become a kamikaze terrorist and slay them all, even if I had to commit suicide.

Violence brings violence. And this war is just a big waste of lifes.

More people have died in Iraq since the beginning of the war than in the whole reign of Saddam! What does that say about the way.

Those 100k are published figures of Civilians who have died as a result of the Coalition invasion.

Oh, so you mean the twin towers in NYC still stand? Sorry but I visited "them" last summer and it sure seemed like an empty lot to me...

Also, the numbers of about 4,000 being killed that day are accurate - the government says so, the plaques at the memorials site says so, and there are more sources... how dense are you?

I'm disgusted at your views on this, gattoplano - also did you realize those stats that Crusader posted:
24,865 civilians were killed in the last two years, almost all by violence.
Those violence things are civilians killing civilians - extremists doing what they will to get their way or force an opinion. America is in there to REMOVE that threat from innocent Iraqis!

I wrote a poem on this a while back that might give you some insights:

THE TRUE USA (Copyright Matt Holt 2005)

Many hear the name yet few hear the meaning,
Even fewer see not where the nation is leaning.
Media and scandal shadow reality,
Depriving their pride of nationality.

What respect it had is nearly diminished,
If truth not revealed, spread of lies finished,
Terrorism and evil will grasp the power,
All last positives the scum will devour.

This planet indeed is a planet in need,
A world of money in the hand of greed.
This country founded to even out,
But ending up with tumult โ€˜bout.

The USA is not of want or malice,
Not of oil, green, or hateful palace,
None is to be of retribution,
Nor unjust and vengeful execution.

Many hear the name yet few hear the meaning,
Now the deed is more demeaning.
In the title one word for each and all,
Flexible to reach one small or tall.

United for the oneness, united for the strength,
Tiring most in its path of awesome length.
Only the brave and only the willing,
Make this path worth fulfilling.

States are the ironic divisions,
Which hold together aft collisions,
Grasping the unity under one God,
Depending where people heartlessly trod.

America is the name under which we stand,
Held together with unity, hand in hand.
Wisdom and knowledge mark its boldness,

Courage and balance keep out coldness.
It has reasons for going to war,
Against the forces which cruelly tore
Our dignity, charged thousands of lives,
To ensure our humble flag survives.

The agreements broken, the money stole,
Those in guilt should pay the toll!
Under Godโ€™s almighty order
War will not invade our border!

As we fight tyranny to its final end,
Dictators and liars we apprehend,
Freedom will come forth and rule,
Left not for grabs to the avid fool!

Many hear the name yet few hear the meaning,
Even fewer see not where the nation is leaning.
People commonly think weโ€™re doing fine,
But in truth whatโ€™s failing is its design.

Our grand justice bound by law,
The stubborn people found a flaw,
That defect being literal sense,
The common mind clogged too dense!

Removing God from our binding pledge,
Puts our nation on teetering edge,
Having rebuked our must trusted ally,
Then on whom shall we now rely?

What will it take all hope abound,
To turn these people's minds around,
And veil them in reality,
By perfect logical mentality!?

It is not the chair which weakens us,
It is not the chair which beacons us,
The body chooses where our nations stands,
The body chooses where our nation lands.

So in conclusion the country is
What the body whole does and says,
The righteous shown everyday,
And that in all is the true U.S.A.

Soon I'm adding this stanza:

Overseas in distant lands,
Signs say, in locals' hands:
"Iraqi people happy today,
Thank you, Thank you, USA."
