Hi all,

OK we'll start with the hypothetical one since i only just thought about it. From what i understand, registering a domain of a celebrities name (i.e. tomhanks.com) is an issue as it's likely their name is a TM right? But what if my name was also tom hanks? Would it then depend on domain usage?

Secondly, I have been running some site ideas through my head and one of them involves caching a part or entire page so the content would actually be transfered onto my server. Surely this has copyright implications? I came to teh conclusion (and actually i was wanting to do this as part of the site features) that it would be better to have the user agree that they can authorize the content to be copied, but if i was to turn this into a bot (or crawler) or a service where anyone can request a page to be cached regardless of their role on the specific page or site what would be the issues with this? Same concept as google really since they cache pages.

Any interesting thoughts or input on this are welcomed :)

Matt.

Hi Matt, As i only have experience of your first question, that is the one i will answer.
I speak only from my experience, i owned the name and website of a very famous premier league international footballer, i built a fan site about him and it was very popular, he and his agent knew about this and had no problems with what i was doing.
I think the trouble starts when you try to profit from or bring the celebs name into disrepute.
Obviously if you have the same name and build a site about yourself that is ok,but again should you try to profit from having the same name then the trouble could potentially start.
Hope this helps.

Thanks

Yep, Don't get me wrong I'm not looking to make profit from registering a domain as described, it was merely something that came into my head while posting about my second question :)

Maybe i should change my name to Tom Hanks...claim it back

Thanks for the reply.
