No idea.. I just saw this on Digg and posted it here. I know nothing about these guys so proceed with the usual caution. Read the TOS

Be aware! You don't own the domain! It will automatically renew and I think you can't change the NS yourself!

Can you clarify that?

You have to ask them to change the domain info, change NS etc.. you don't really own it !

You don't have any interface to manage the domain!

(BTW, I can be wrong, but I read that 2 days ago somewhere ...)

I've seen good reviews regarding their hosting and do see that the reviews report few options so you may have to ask to have certain things done but I would expect that the domain is indeed yours.

It's always a good idea to ask customer support about the service before you pay for it anyways. Make sure that the domain name is freely transferable to you once you terminate your account.

This is a loss leader, folks, remember, you're still paying for the services in the long run.

That's good advice Steve.. after being burned by 1and1 on loss-leader regs, I'm a little leery myself.

I had a chat with their live chat and this is how it went:

You are now speaking with Duncan H. of Sales.

Duncan H.: Hello Chris, how are you?

Chris: Im great thanks, and yourself

Duncan H.: What questions did you have?

Chris: Am I obliged to keep the domain with HostMySite.com after the 12 months?

Duncan H.: No.

Chris: Great, and is the domain completely mine?

Chris: Hello?

Chris: are you there?

Duncan H.: I apologize

Duncan H.: Yes, like any domain registration, the domain is completely yours.

Duncan H.: You can register it, wait the mandatory 60 - 90 days and run.

Duncan H.: Renewal of the domains is $8.95 so that is also less expensive than a great number of registrars.

Chris: So just to confirm, I have a page like any other domain registration, to change name servers etc and after 90 days I can transfer to another registrar if I wish?

Duncan H.: Yes, you can bolt after 90 days if you so desire.

Duncan H.: Of course we'd like you to host here, we do have a variety of plans to suit just about any need: http://www.hostmysite.com/order.cfm?id=247

Chris: Thanks for the help Duncan.

Duncan H.: You're welcome Chris, have a good day.

My two main concerns, when he didn't reply to my message for about 5 minutes when I asked if the domain was completely mine and the link he sent me looks like an affiliate link.

Thanks,
Chris

Who cares if it was an affiliate link? Doesn't everyone have the right to earn a little cash? I would only be concerned about the 5 minute wait.

In the end though for everyone, don't waste your tome. When will some of you learn that you usually get what you pay for! Is the hassle really worth saving $1-4 dollars? Is the $1-4 dollars saved really going to make or break you?

Everyone does have the right to earn a bit of money but it seemed very unprofessional to me.

And when you register many domains the $4 will add up, its nothing to sneeze at IMO

If one is serious about domains, the $4 is not a big deal. It is common sense that better service trumps what puny savings one might get along with a nightmare of a company.

Anyone use this yet with any success? What did you reg?

I just regged two .us at $2.95 and the reg is not instant, nor does the user interface contain very many features. You can list your domains and administer your own DNS and that's it from what I can see. On the plus side, response by support has been quick and painless when I've asked questions. Keeping in mind that they are a hosting company selling domains at a loss to attract hosting customers, make of it what you will. 6 more days before the $2.95 offer expires.

Indeed Very true!

Remember only,
$6.99 at domainsite :)

And don't forget there are many on a budget so $2.95 doesn't seem like a big risk, while $6.99 might ;) Let's keep on topic here and leave the other registrars to their own thread..

:hi:

I had regged 2 domains about a week ago or so as a test.

I had two seperate accounts which I was able to combine into one.

Prevously I believed Name Servers could not be changed by the User
and their Rep confirmed this. However...

you CAN change the DNS but NOT from the Control Panel. The domain is locked and you cannot Unlock it yourself but if you go to:

https://manage.safesecureweb.com/

You can Lock/Unlock, Change Name Servers, Get Auth Code, etc
BUT you will need to get your User Name and Password from the company since it's different from your regular User Name and Password
AND you cannot change this User name or Password.

Is it worth it?

Patrick

Update: Although 2 different Reps told me you cannot change the
User Name and Password that is not true.

I have done both at the manage.safesecureweb.com Control Panel.

$2.95 ? So they're loosing at Least $3.30 per domain and make $2.70 the 2nd year ?
If they don't sell many hosting accounts i don't think they will last for long

On the bright site they will gather some people
These promos are not exactly promos, i would sort them as "advertising expenses"
It's better for them to give the same amount to customers with their loss

However i don't like and don't trust people selling below $6.25
