For the Mac Smultron is great. I prefer Coda (paid app) but if you dont want to pay, Smultron is a great little app...much better than any Windows code/text editor hands down!

I also like OpenOffice - it is basically microsoft word, only free!

I think Abiword looks a bit better than OpenOffice.
