Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

Want to share what somebody posted on the Nextdoor site. Mayor here posted an update on this, I get an email, I go read:

From some over-reactionary type in my community

"Some in our community are going to be in need as this quarantine continues."

"Let's keep engaged caring for each other while we wait out the plague! (Never thought I would have to write that!)"

There is no quarantine.

This isn't the plague.

Endless nonsense.

Yes, I didn't read some article from some random person on the internet who was assigned to write an article on this. There are plenty of already existing legit sources to get info.
Endless nonsense.
Mmmk well you're clearly just trolling this thread.

Not that you care, but my Ignore list just gained a 4th member, for the duration of this thread.

Yesterday I "viewed ignored posts" for a page or two and "wow", I've really missed some "great" content that's been posted here.... O_o Also saved a lot of time and energy!

THAT'S why we're in for incredible devastation.

The real devastation is going to be the (over) reaction to this, something with a low death count compared to the yearly flu, and past pandemics like the Swine Flu. Something with flu like symptoms. Posts like yours that are fear mongering, not based on facts type stuff. Think of the economy, what people will be going thru with job loss and all the issues that come with that. Be sensible about it, but don't cross over into hysteria.

Comcast and T-Mobile have announced suspensions of their internet data cap policies in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Comcast says it will no longer charge overage fees for home internet customers that go over its broadband data caps, while T-Mobile says it’s removing all data caps for its mobile customers. AT&T and Verizon have taken similar measures.

Ok then what? Say we all get it and we recover? R we immune then? Or can we get it again and again?

the reports are very mixed in that , their have been reports of reinfection , but with every other virus, you will build immunity once you have contracted, that is why these yearly flu and colds don’t make everyone sick each year. Hopefully the truth with COVID will be no different.

Walmart is reducing its hours nationwide, starting Sunday March 15

Starting March 15, Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets will be open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. until further notice. This will help ensure associates can clean and stock products. Stores operating under more reduced hours will keep current hours of operation.

Kroger is reducing its hours, starting Sunday, March 15 (I believe just in certain regions?)

A spokesperson for Kroger says that store hours will be from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. "until further notice" to focus on cleaning and replenishment. (I believe this may just be in certain regions?)

Some other chains are making similar moves (such as Publix, and H-E-B)

Public response will play a major role in how we as a society can bend and not break.

This is the scene at O’Hare airport. The traveler who took the photo said it’s a 6-hour wait for bags then on to customs for 2-4 more of waiting in shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Police are handing out water and disinfectant wipes.

Passengers stuck in long lines for immigration at @DFWAirport tell us there are no offers of hand sanitizer, gloves, or masks from U.S. Customs / Immigration. Travelers say they’ve had no screenings of temp yet and no one following #coronavirus protocols.

Passengers waited in line for hours at customs at @DFWAirport. Many concerned about being so close to others during the #COVID-19 outbreak. The airport saying “CBP officers and the CDC are following federal guidelines to conduct enhanced screening for passengers”

I note that some posts compared covid-19 to flu by solely death counts. If you read those posts, I recommend you to ignore all of them because they intend to hide the whole picture of covid-19 and to mislead you:

1. Only mentioning death counts without mentioning death rates is misleading. Death rate is one of the most important figures that determines how dangerous of a virus is. Hiding the death rates intend to mislead others that covid-19 is much less dangerous than flu. However, the fact is that the death rate of covid-19 (2% in the US, 3.7% globally, as of the time I write this post) is much higher than that of flu (0.1%), showing that covid-19 is much deadlier than flu.

2. Comparing an exponentially increasing covid-19 death count (still in the beginning of spread of the new virus) to a quite known flu death count (well estimated based on previous years' numbers) is completely nonsense and meaningless. Comparing a non-final death count to a "final" death count is like comparing apple to orange that cannot draw any conclusion.

3. There are many factors resulting in currently lower covid-19 death count than flu death count, such as very limited covid-19 testing resources, different outbreak periods (weeks vs months), as well as different reactions of the governments and the public (more proactive to stop covid-19 spread). These factors make the comparison unfair and biased. Death rates can eliminate these factors' effect and tell how dangerous of the diseases are.

If you want to compare covid-19 to other diseases, I recommend you to mention death rates as well so that we can have a bigger picture and judge better.

What's the large tent for at University of Cincinnati Medical Center? Coronavirus

Large tents have been setup on the campuses of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and West Chester Hospital, as the UC Health facilities prepare to treat patients with the new coronavirus.

UC Health is calling the temporary structures "respiratory waiting rooms," spokeswoman Amanda Nageleisen told The Enquirer on Saturday night.

Apparel retailer Urban Outfitters, which owns brands including Anthropologie and Free People, said on Saturday it was closing all its consumer stores worldwide until at least March 28.

Patagonia, Glossier and Neighborhood Goods have also announced their stores will temporarily close.

Apple is shutting down all their stores worldwide (except China I believe).

Verizon said it was temporarily closing “a number of its stores” across the United States in order to expand its work from home policy to include some of its retail employees.

T-Mobile US said it will temporary close its stores that are located in a shopping mall starting March 16.

Chick-fil-A is making a few operational adjustments due to the recent coronavirus outbreak. (My local location is moving to drive-thru only)

Starbucks may go drive-thru only or limit seating

Walmart, McDonald's, Home Depot, and 16 other retailers share how the coronavirus outbreak could affect business

Grocers limit food purchases, urge shoppers not to hoard as panic buying continues. Kroger ramps up hiring

Probably my fault for even engaging in this nonsense, but here goes. ....Are you really saying, "the real devastation is going to be the (over) reaction to this?"

Have you not seen or heard of the devastation in the ER's across the globe? You call that an overreaction?......People are dying by respiratory failure, because doctors are having to choose who gets life saving equipment. Is that not devastation? Is that an overreaction?.....Man, you need to lay off the keyboard, because the only overreaction at this point is your replies.

Speaking more of the U.S. but when economy goes bad, people lose their jobs, they have less money to........buy food, get medical help for other issues etc. I said react, not overreact.

60 deaths, 40 in Washington

which is 20 deaths in the other 49 states.

We haven't reacted this way to other issues.
No, you specifically said:

The real devastation is going to be the (over) reaction to this,

Although, I don't blame you for trying to change what you said. Especially when considering how ignorant it was.

Yes, that's what I said, I didn't change that. I think the damage is going to be worse than the actual virus. People do die from not getting the right food, nutrition, health care. It's hard to get that when you lose you job.

"which is 20 deaths in the other 49 states"

Not incredible devastation numbers to me. Our economy is about to be another story.

Infected people without symptoms might be driving the spread of coronavirus more than we realized

New studies in several countries and a large coronavirus outbreak in Massachusetts bring into question reassuring assertions by US officials about the way the novel virus spreads.

These officials have emphasized that the virus is spread mainly by people who are already showing symptoms, such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing. If that's true, it's good news, since people who are obviously ill can be identified and isolated, making it easier to control an outbreak.

But it appears that a Massachusetts coronavirus cluster with at least 82 cases was started by people who were not yet showing symptoms, and more than half a dozen studies have shown that people without symptoms are causing substantial amounts of infection.

You keep pointing to numbers, but even the experts are saying the numbers are not accurate. For instance those that died as a result of the virus, that had underlying issues such as copd are not being counted. They are chalked up as death by copd. There are other reasons why other numbers are wrong as well, such as very few being tested.

These are the numbers at hand. I know it will get worse. Still not anything in the league of the Swine Flu or yearly flu. Take normal precautions, be aware of those more at risk, get the testing out etc. But don't crash the place in the process. Losing a job is pretty devastating to people, much worse than feeling like shit for a couple of weeks.

Some doctors have projected up to 1 million people in the US have infection currently, The under reporting numbers aren't helping because when actual tested, confirmed numbers begin coming in , those numbers are going be very high because much more testing is taking place now.

It will undoubtedly cause some panic because the numbers are going to go up substantially as opposed to what they are dripping in currently

Many infected people who are dying right now, or who died in the past 2 months, will probably never be tested either. With so few tests, why "waste" them on the dead? Still, the truth will come out.

And they said over 100,000 infected in Ohio.......0 deaths. And if we have millions infected and 60 dead, pretty low death rate. But how is that even defined? We have infected, confirmed cases, deaths. How do they know if somebody is infected, if they weren't tested?

I think you may very well be right, I don't think we will get accurate numbers until this far over and the history has begun to be written regarding COVID-19 , I just wish i could see what history is going to say right now, it is going to read much different than we are being told right now IMO
