Interesting read on top of r/entrepreneur today by u/kjb123etc

"Here are the highlights of what I found:
  • .com URLs are over 33% more memorable than URLs with other top-level domains.

  • .com is the #1 most trusted TLD.

  • When people misremember a URL, they’re 3.8 times more likely to assume it ends in .com than anything else."

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Who are those 1,500 persons?
US citizens?

I guess quoting these figures here reassure you that investing in gtlds is not for you.

.com is "standard" extension, it should not be "best" extension only because of that...

There is nothing really to debate or experiment as there is no denying that dot com is first choice.
But to use an example of why dot com isn't always a best choice. A couple of months ago I registered popular keyword as a type in with the gTLD. The keyword has been gone on all extensions for years and most gtlds as well. The second keyword is also a popular keyword used as the gTLD. The same first keyword is also registered with every conceivable second keyword combination in dot com. What I registered as a type in is memorable and searched and possibly one of best combinations of words. If I want the keyword in dot com I will need to buy at least three words. The keyword "free".

One can get the full analysis at the link below but 68% US, 9% Europe, 19% India/Pakistan only 4% all of the rest of world combined.

Also gives age spread.

It is important to realize that .blog is only new gTLD included in survey so we don't know how a top 10 would have placed. Also the only country code in survey was .us so does not inform the trust in country codes, that surveys have found to be high in many regions of world.

While study interesting, the trust figures are so discordant with what truly global surveys have found re .org for example that I have serious doubts.

Bob

PS I requested and got from author full paper only slightly longer. Still not clear how 1500 were selected. Interesting those from outside US trust .us more than those in USA. .io does poorly in recognition, but much better among younger respondents.

PSS Edit The made up domain name used in survey is English phrase so that skews to English speaking regions. The author primarily writes for blogger community explaining why .blog is only new extension in survey. I suspect respondents from that community.
