China will block .com's for a competive edge.

The above statement is just a prediction of mine. Blocking .com's for an unfair advantage over US company's would not be beyond them and it is definitely doable. Verisign does not even have a license to use or sell .com's in China, it was only tolerated. But that might change very soon (effective March 1, 2016)

Research MIIT, the Chinese government organization that regulates the internet and domain names in China. This has all been talked about for quite sometime, long before Google re-organized under abc.xyz (do some research for once). It was also well understood that .xyz and .club would be two of the first foreign registrars to get a license in China.

According to Daniel Negari, XYZ is the only U.S. registrar to apply for a license in China AND coordinate with ICANN about it. While a lot of .com loyalists have been bashing new GTLD's a lot of people have been in the background hand registering cheap domain names. A lot of large .COM portfolio holders already sold out and domain name news outlets are slowly easing on their criticism.

TheDomains was right, it will take an intense marketing campaign by at least 2 to 3 major brands. He mentions the Super Bowl as a good example and if you do some research, that is exactly what's happening.

In line with a policy released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in May 2015, only 14 top-level domains are authorised in the Chinese mainland, all of which are run by Chinese registries. These TLDs include .CN, several Chinese language TLDs such as 中国 (“.CHINA”) and new gTLDs such as .REN, .WANG and .TOP, but do not include the most well-known of all the, the .COM, or other such as .NET and .INFO.

February 01, 2016

To our supporters in China:

Thank you for your continued support of .xyz! With over 50% of all .xyz registrations now originating from China, we are fully committed to growing in this market with our valued supporters and partners in 2016.

In 2015, we saw huge growth in .xyz adoption worldwide. However, no country grew more than China. There are approximately 700,000 .xyz domains registered in China, including valuable 3-character, 4-character, and 5-character domains. Additionally, there are now over 200,000 total .xyz IDNs registered – many of which are in Chinese scripts.

The value of .xyz domains has also skyrocketed. 8.xyz sold in September 2015 for $82,000 USD. In November, 6.xyz sold for $125,000 USD. One month later, 9.xyz sold for $176,000 USD! Other sales in China include YY.xyz for $39,000 USD, 22.xyz for $27,00 USD, and ZZ.xyz for $18,000 USD. Even more impressive, 180.xyz sold for $3,500 USD in January 2016 after being originally purchased for $250 USD exactly one year earlier (1400% return on investment)!

To follow an extremely successful 2015, we are thrilled to announce that XYZ has acquired its Chinese business license, and is therefore an officially approved Chinese entity. We expect to be one of the first non-Chinese registries to be fully Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) accredited in the upcoming months. This means registrants will be able to host their .xyz websites in China. As a result, we expect adoption of .xyz in China to grow exponentially in 2016.

To celebrate all of our progress, our valued registrar partners in China are hosting special .xyz promotions for the Chinese New Year (Happy Year of the Monkey). There are still extremely valuable .xyz domains available for standard registration fees, including 3-characters and 6-number combinations (we expect all of these to be registered this year. Click here for the list). To view a complete list of short, memorable .xyz domains to register at your registrar, please visitwww.gen.xyz/premiums.

If you are already an owner of .xyz domains, please be sure to renew them. With MIIT accreditation imminent, we expect the value and popularity of .xyz to grow even stronger in China. We do not want anyone to release the great domains they were able to secure as early adopters!

To receive the most up-to-date news about XYZ and our progress in China, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Thank you again for your support.

Yours truly,

Websites Blocked in Mainland China:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Websites_blocked_in_mainland_China

nGTLD's are already blocked, but some of them have applied for MIIT accreditation. I am pretty sure you haven't kept up with the politics in China. Most of your reading probably involves US and .com news.

Google and Facebook are doing their best to (re)enter China and I am guessing it won't be under an illegal TLD.

Are Google and Faceboon blocked because they in .com or because they are ..well, Google and Facebook?

Also RenRen and Baidu are not blocked and they are in .com, coincidence? I don't think so. Just protectionist politics.Chinese government rather help companies they can control, than foreigners.

True. That's why it is common sense they will block .com. They can control .xyz but not .com.

FYI: China made a deal with XYZ to pre-register over 10,000 banned words / phrases (can they do that with .com?)

I am sure they also registered enough premium .xyz domain names to give their companies a competitive edge including RenRen and Baidu.

If you read my posts they actually make sense. I already answered most of this type of critisism but it is now starting to repeat. I am not a troll. My statements make sense, you just have to actually think and do some reading before mindlessly posting.

Google left China after they were hacked and had intellectual property stolen. They also refused to align themselves with China's censorship policies. Then after they left, they got blocked. Now Google is headed back but will it be under an illegal TLD?

This is public information.

You are wrong. There is something very new here and that is Mark Zuckerberg's interest in the Chinese market. He want's in. Read for yourself, it is public information but people are slow.

Most people are good at hindsight but not foresight.

So you just confirming that Google was banned because they had disagreement with Chinese government, not because they used site in .com
That's exactly what I wrote.

Nobody is going to ban .com in China. End of story. The whole drama is created by people who invested in rubbish extentions.

There are rubbish domains in .com .net .org .biz .info .pro ... .xyz and .top and there are gems in .com .net .org .biz .info .pro ... .xyz and .top but non of these gTLDs itself are rubbish.

About 90 % of all existing / registered domains are not in end use and from this 90 % are again 90 % .com's.
So the biggest amount of 'cold' domains are .com's.
Seems like the new generations love new TLDs - like .xyz and of course like .top.
There is no drama, there is just the fact that new gTLDs because there are new thoughts.
Building new area in a new era.

We should not be in fear to be a domain pioneer.
Creativity don't need .com ;)

So what about the misinformation that this thread is spreading, that .com will be banned in China?

That is complete bullshit.
New gTLDs developing blah-blah-blah is OK with me, let them develop and grow, no biggie. A lot of people including me not fans of them, but there's few fans, OK.
But claiming that .com will be banned is blatant lie. That is the problem, that you guys trying to promote this rubbish starting with a lie. Why don't you do it some other way?

Hey @djum, why don't you let them enjoy their party? It's obvious they do not want to hear the truth and feel the reality.

That's absolutely not fair, though I think that if this were to happen it would be changed shortly after.

I can just imagine how pleased Qihoo CEO, Zhou Hongyi will be at finding out that his purchase of 360.com for $17 Million from vodafone in 2015 is all lost on 1st March when .com is banned lol.

I think not.

That being said what I will say is that the Chinese authorities clearly want this data from Chinese registrars for something and we can only suspect what it may be for. The Chinese government has continued to try and stem capital outflows check this article:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...new-steps-to-control-financial-risks-outflows

In every thread like this there's some element of truth or at least something to be aware of.

I do not think for a second they will ban .coms any time soon, but they are desperately trying to halt the outflows of capital by any means necessary to prop up the economy etc. It doesn't seem chinese investors are worried or else they would be fast exiting the domain investment market.

However, it's a story worth keeping a close eye on going forward and if they will try interfering in this space in any way, shape of form. Time will tell!

In a nutshell, China is not talking about blocking .com's. They are talking about controlling registrars and Web companies from doing business in their country without a license. The deadline is soon, is that possibly why they are aggressively aquiring millions of dollars of .com's and .nets before then. Xyz biggest value imo is not on the merits of their gtld but it's relationship with the government. Foresight? I think either idn.idn or idn.com is something to think about..... p.s .com is still the number 1 choice in the world and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Just want to add I probably would have invested a bit in .XYZ if I was able to get either a one-word, 3l, or 3n. Unfortunately those type of domains were either reserved or priced higher than I would spend on such a speculative investment.

I have always thought that .xyz and .top are garbage. The fact that both TLDs are getting the majority of their registrations from China tells a lot. It also tells us that they are in bed with the communist party of China.

If you really want to do business in China and get favorable looks from the Chinese cybercops, get a .cn or .top or .wang or whatever, stuff made in China. Why bother with a silly string like .xyz ?

Just to say, against this threads heading, I personally never was saying / writing that China will block .com and I never was believing that - I didn't wrote this thread('s heading).

What I think is, that .com will get in serious competition with the major new gTLDs in the next dacades.
For me it's not important from where a gTLD comes from - I choose them from their potencial, not from their origin.
So I will not start political discussions here.

In a symbolic view, from it's literal meaning, no other TLD than .top can be the 'first TLD' (top = highest) and not other TLD than '.xyz' can be 'the last TLD' (xyz = completion) which means that all other TLDs are somewhere between those two ALPHA and OMEGA TLDs haha that's it in my eyes.

There is a fight for Internet dominance. China government doesn't want to be owned by the West. China government are looking at ways to self rule, and by selecting extensions on their terms gives them autonomy.

If one thinks the Internet is to be kept as homogeneous, then it could be wise to reconsider.
