I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
With a monstrous drop-off to only 130 picks this week, it seems that the Pandemic Petes may have figured out .CA is not a get rich quick scheme and moved elsewhere, probably towards NFTs.

Similar average-quality TBR lists over the previous few months have been in the 250-280 pick range, and it's easy to see why this number dropped, as at least two heavy hitters (who buy 60-100 per week) were not present this time around.

Things might just be getting back to normal...

Or Pete was at the cottage, with no WIFI, and will be back with his 3-figure list next week....

Yesterday, WHC Hosting absolutely melted down and a lot of their servers were totally wiped, and there is definitely cause for alarm that the data cannot ever be recovered (WTF - are they not doing offsite backups as promised?). As one client on Facebook said "This has been the worst outage I have seen of any host in over 15yrs in the industry. Really scary stuff"

From the WHC Blog:

We can confirm that multiple systems have had their data wiped. We are attempting to recover source data and restore service functionality and will post updates as soon as they become available.

While limited data recovery is still possible on our end, the likelihood of a full account recovery in the next 24 hours is low. We are nonetheless continuing our investigation and making this restoration our number 1 priority.

Really scary stuff? Understatement of the year, and you can read up about all the WHC carnage on their live blog, which reads more like a casualty report from a nuclear bomb:

Major Incident in Progress

Final Update on the Death of WHC Hosting.

No offline backup system, servers wiped, local backup servers toast (a major reason you are supposed to use an OFFLINE Backup service - local backup is useless when the crap hits the fan) and unless you have a recent backup downloaded, your site data looks to be gone forever.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen from a supposedly-major Canadian hosting company, and it's quite obvious that WHC was trying to maximize profits by running their hosting biz on the razor's edge and without any net. Money, money, money, profitz, profitz, profitz!

And now they and their clients are going to pay dearly for it.

WHC finally came clean (sort of) on what happened, which is even more bizarre than what I imagined (server fire):

Based on our investigation to date, the morning of August 28 at approximately 6AM, an individual with a third-party service provider used their privileged account access to connect to one of our datacenter’s management portals and without authorization, initiated server reimaging on some of our backup servers, then on some of our production servers.

Within only hours our incident response team had identified the issue and disabled access to the source account, preventing any further damage. The environment was secured, the individual fully locked out, and our disaster recovery plan immediately kicked into action but damage was already done.

Now all you kids out there who want a career in IT, pay close attention, because this is the exact reason why OFFSITE BACKUPS exist - to mitigate a LOCAL disaster like this. WHC told their clients they had offsite/remote backups in place, but this turned out to be untrue, and the supposedly-offsite backups were in reality local servers, and were easily damaged using the same system access as the production servers. It also likely invalidates any disaster insurance policy they held.

Remember kids, when it comes to OFFLINE BACKUPS, geographical distance, 3rd-party control and limited access are your friends - backing crap up at the exact same location and using the exact same system access protocols is both IDIOTIC and USELESS, as we clearly have witnessed from this unfortunate WHC test case.

The dearth of LLL ca domains on the last few TBRs is truly astounding, as there was only a single junker last week (YZD - still available for hand-reg LOL) and in a potentially-unprecedented occurrence, there are ZERO LLLs available this week.

No premium 3-letters I can understand, but there are always a few crap ones, chock-full of J's, Q's, X's, Y's and Z's, to choose from. But not lately, and it seems that current LLL owners are in a holding pattern and renewing those JZX ca beauties rather than dumping the garbage.

So is that who actually bought it? You would think a gov't agency would just use a .gc web address...
the bureaucrats spent 17 times too much for a 3 word .ca. that's easy to do when they are spending someone elses money.

Yeah, they seem to have stolen $18 million in member dues from the previous entity.

And watch all the Pandemic Petes see that incredibly-random, never-to-be-repeated $17.5K sale for a 20-letter, 3-word domain and flood today's TBR with orders.

After the last few horrible TBR lists, Danny Hunter had to change his vacation plans.

I don't know if I should be happy or sad that my government spent $17.5k (usd) on a 3-word .CA...:xf.frown:

No idea what happened to Siber-WHC today, but most of my orders were passed over (did they melt down or get a CIRA timing penalty?) and I picked up one at an alt-registrar late and some went to other registrars, also late.

I hate when this happens, and I need to look at the TBR results to see what might have occurred.

Watch the TBR backorder deadlines this week as the times have not changed like we have changed our clocks. CIRA is UTC-based...

That's an unfortunate price, as I can only assume some people on here would pay that. I didn't even try and assumed it would be a nosebleed counter that might be the end of me.

For example, I recently put in a $2K bid on a 6-letter non-word (valuation on GD ~$3K) and the counter was...

$1,250,000 USD.

We are weird with .ca domains:

we-d (dot) ca

A real business. A real good example of not registering domains when you're high.

Even zanier, their brand name is WE: )

Good evening .CA domainers. I have a buyer request, a great opportunity to make some quick money before the end of the year...

My client is looking for The[WORD].ca domains, and has a substantial $x,xxx per-domain budget. The "WORD" must be short, max 7 characters in length (10 characters max total for the entire domain, not including the .ca part). Examples of the type of domains my buyer is seeking:

TheBase .ca
TheFly .ca
TheMoose .ca
* preference for one-syllable WORD, singular
* domain MUST start with "The"

If you own any The[WORD].ca domains, please let me know via email: bill [at] nameninja [dot] com.

Thanks very much. Happy holidays!
