The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Are any feelings objective? Pretty sure that is not how feelings work.

At some point when there is a 71-2 vote that subjectivity goes out the window.
The community has spoken.

Brad
But the poll poses a question that has no bearing on what transpired.

The real question here is... When is it okay to ignore a request from a Mod?

It's worth noting that this policy is not new; there have been standards for avatars and usernames since 2015, which includes disallowing potential trademark infringement.

Here are some examples of usernames that were changed in the past:
  • CaptainJackass
  • name-prostitute
  • seosperm
  • cox4ass
  • nortoncomsetup
  • skypesupport
  • wwhatdafuq
  • ezstrippoker
  • Dirtbag11
  • Quicken Support
  • sexisfree
  • Realpoopypants
  • Smelly Scammer
  • Deltaairline800
  • Get scamed
  • unitedairlines
  • Justmycock79
  • cumsh0t

We can probably agree that some of these are worse than others, but does the community need to have usernames like these?

You literally have people that get market-restricted for good reasons, that you still let use this forum. Does this community need people like that? Spammers? You literally bumped a spam thread yesterday. People/Companies listed on hate-watch sites? Somebody's avatar is the issue?

Might want to get the people using a Facebook Icon to change, are they Facebook? I don't have a problem with it but if we are talking impersonating or professional.

In the interest of progress, here are some things that would help if we discussed them:
  1. Do you think that all usernames and avatars should be allowed?
  2. Do you think that avatars which are suggestive of murder (or connote murder) are professional? If so, why?
  3. Do you think that a professional community needs to have avatars where arguably one of the best actors of our generation is doing his best to convey "I want to kill you" with his facial expressions?
  4. Do you think avatars like #2 and #3 encourage a professional atmosphere?
  5. What types of avatars and usernames should we disallow if we want to improve professionalism?
#5 is the most important question.

Thanks.

Edited to add one more question that accidentally got deleted before posting.

I think there are two directions that can be taken (if NP wants to go the "more professional" route):
  1. People must use defined types of avatars that leave no room for subjective decision-making.
  2. People pick their own avatars, understanding that they must be professional, and all members accept that mods have final say of what is considered professional.

Or you can leave it the way it was for the last 17 years and simply not overreact to an avatar getting flagged. 1 person has an issue and now you want to fundamentally change it?

I can see where you are coming from and I don't like horror movies and not a Shining fanboi, but it's iconic. JB used to use Michael Corleone for a long time he killed a lot more people than Nicholson in that movie, would that not be allowed? If you want to go down a road fine, while I don't agree make it universal.

Cartoons are not professional
Other characters who committed crimes in movies not professional
People getting high or drunk in pics not professional

etc.............

I should also say that #2 and #3 are leading questions and should maybe be re-phrased in an objective way.

NP seems to be saying they want to make a change, so I was offering my opinion within that understanding.

Another point that I think is relevant to why people are flipping their lid.

I am sure Eric, Amanda, Paul, Brian Harbin, Edward Zeiden and every other mod has seen a post by Elad N, why did they not ask for a change before this one member made a complaint?

Which doesn't make much sense wanting to go against a 71-2 vote. It's pretty rare you get that kind of agreement around here. This should be a simple thing.

I think we need to stop referencing this poll. The question, as it was presented, has no bearing on the real issue or discussion.

The fact that Elad's avatar was not offensive has nothing to do with NP wanting to create a more professional feel in the forum.

Actually it is, it's what the thread/poll is about. It's literally in the screenshot. Changing avatar rules won't make this place more professional, it'll just make it bland. And probably loss of members when you get that uptight. There are other, real things you can do if that's the goal.

A couple potential reasons come to mind:
  1. We are looking at so many things each day that unless a report tells us to focus on something and think about it, we rarely have time to do so.
  2. Some moderators may not think it is unprofessional.

The question is:

Namepros forced me to change my avatar - Do you find it or me disturbing

The mod never told Elad he (or his avatar) was disturbing. He was told it was unprofessional.

The other issue - Elad posted this poll after ignoring the mod's request, not after complying with it.

So what you're really saying is, if any member thinks that they will have the community's backing, go ahead and ignore the mods.

I said what I said already, go reread it. They overreacted. But NP mentioned "community moderation" which never really has been clearly defined. Is this an example of it? The community thinks you overreacted. You can fix that.

I agree with that. And at least here we're being told that NP is open to those discussions. So let's have them.

They overreacted. And then Elad overreacted. And then there was no opportunity to undo anything.

We need to stop blaming. It's not productive.

Again, you keep posting stuff that doesn't make any sense, you're literally repeating it. They can do stuff anytime they want. They could have 11 pages ago.

As a parent, I get where the mod is coming from.

In the heat of the moment, I'll tell my kids to do (or stop doing) something. If they freak out and ignore me, there's no way I'm going to apologize to them (even if I think I overreacted). If they do what I ask, and I think on it later and realize I was in the wrong, I'll tell them.

NP members are the kids in this analogy, like it or not.

I start feeling like you are one of the collective called "Team Bravo".

"Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated".

You all were bosses to us, now it is clarified that we should view y'all as our parents.

Get it. Thanks.

I think some people just have trouble accepting authority. The mods are the authority on the forum. Someone has to be, right?

When you're the authority, you're listened to first, and then you discuss later. Parenting 101. It goes for basically all situations where someone makes the rules and someone follows them.

PS I find your analogy calling all 70+ people and others that posted here as being unruly kids that don't understand what is best for them literally more unprofessional and/or disturbing than Elad's avatar ever could have. We are all mature adults here. It is just a pity that very reasonable and logical thing that we all are conveying is falling on deaf ears (figuratively).

Well now you're putting words in my mouth. I was just using an analogy to make a point.

So you think the mod should reverse his decision. Does that mean you're okay with a member ignoring a request from a mod?
