Back in 2013, when I first heard the name of this company in India which would help you recharge for mobile internet packs, top-ups, etc, I thought it was called Pay Time and someone was pronouncing it wrong. In fact I heard many people had the same confusion at the time.

It was a website I believe which I started using instead of downloading the app. With that name, the company in India is now valued at over $10 billion offering services from wallets, e-commerce, to insurance and UPI transactions. It has some of the top investment firms like SoftBank, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway backing it with billions in funding.

What do you think of the name? Isn't it a terrible name to have?

But in this case, the company and the concept seems to have overshadowed the effects of the terrible domain name that the company had. It could have been the app mode of business as well, where the app became a major source for users to transact and hence, the domain name did not matter much in this case.

P.S. The Wikipedia page describes the name as follows:
Paytm ("Pay-T-M", pronounced similar to ATM)

What do you think of such a name in the context of a startup or a killer product? Does it matter much or is it just another part of a puzzle, not so significant one?

Exactly. I read it as Pay-trademark!

From what I know, Vijay Sharma (founder of PayTM) coined it as Pay Through Mobile - PayTM. The mobile payments industry in India at that time was in the nascent stage and PayTM revolutionised it by introducing online recharges, bill payments, ticketing, etc. Eventually they turned into a behemoth and one of the biggest startup hits in India valued over $10 billion USD.

I like it. It's kinda clever how the TM both means though mobile and makes the name sounds similar to ATM.

At first I did view it as Pay Trademark and did not think much of it, but once I thought about it at rhyming with ATM, then PayTM seems somewhat memorable to me.

agree . it has rhythm of ATM so looks like a combination of Pay + ATM (as easy as using ATM and then paying)

Isn't the TM at the end odd?

This makes a lot of sense! Is this true? Like is this the reason for the name?
I thought he didn't find the variations available.
Somthing like Twitter vs Twttr

Right. But for a brand, it has to one thing. Don't you agree on this.
People need to know what it stands for, to remember it.
What's your take on this?

Exactly. But what if they don't convey it in that sense.
Although they do!

Look at the last 4 seconds of the advertisement.

But the question is, if your name is bad, will advertisement make up for it?
