Two new pieces of evidence convince me that Safeway did indeed exist in 1982 in Potomac Village.
1. Washington Post article dated November 20, 1980 discusses Safeway 1980–83 “expansion plans” for the DC metro area, which includes MD.
“Safeway now operates about 125 units in the Washington area.”
Safeway Opens East's Largest Grocery Store
To the plaudits of D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, Jr. and exclamations from neighborhood customers -- such as "it's so big"…www.washingtonpost.com
2. George Webb interviewed a local resident (of Bethesda, MD), “Raj,” on video. Resident says he remembers the store being open back then.

Rando person being interviewed says he moved to area in early 80's. He can't remember his friends 36 years ago but can remember CB Ford and who her boyfriend was. Near the end of interview, he admits he is just repeating what he's read or heard from others..
Common thread in this debacle, liberals repeating rumors as evidence.
