Domain Empire

When buying a domain, do you expect to always get a discount on the asking price?

Me and another NP member are having a ridiculous battle over $10 and neither of us will back down on principle. He refuses to sell for a discount on his asking price and I refuse to pay his asking price without getting a discount. His contention is that asking prices are non-negotiable and mine is that they are always negotiable.

What do you think?

I have to admit, the other day I gave a discount to someone. I was firm on my price at $3000 for about a week. But she wrote me a nice letter telling me that she owned the .org domain and was just starting her business and really wanted to invest time in creating a website with the proper domain name and felt a .com was better for her business. She might of gotten to my subconscious when her letter was so nice and sincere. So I sold it to her for $2000. I've had higher offers previously but there's something to be said about people being sincere and honest. (atleast I think she was honest ;). It makes everyone feels better at the end of the day. She got a discount. I was able to help someone out when they just started their business.

But if I dealt with someone like you. I would have said F..u and raised my price to 10,000. I don't mind hagglers, I just hate whiny hagglers. Or hagglers who think they can dictate my price.

HeHe

Lets hope it was not a 60 year old dude sitting in his underwear pretending to be an innocent young business lady. :xf.laugh::ROFL::xf.laugh::ROFL:

Just joking of course, but you have to admit it is funny

I look at it this way....

It costs less than $10 to register a domain. Anything more than that, it is all perceived value.

I fully expect to negotiate, either to buy or to sell.

When I buy, I will always ask for the best price, and usually either take it or leave it at that point, without going back multiple times.

When I sell, I always expect someone will try to lower the price, so my first price is what I would love to sell it for, anything below that, would really think about it.

Digital goods are completely different from physical goods where negotiation has limits...

Ie... if it costs a store $100 to make something, and it is easily sellable, why expect someone to accept a $50 offer for it.

When we are talking bits and bytes, it is just perceived value..... at some point, someone paid $10 or less to handreg that domain. =) A domain is only worth what some sucker.... er person is willing to pay for it.

Just look at flippa and all the garbage being sold there.... (and gems that are often overlooked).

@maksimfa,
but if your request is "under $100" and the offer you recieve is $60, so where more to low the price?
to reg fee?
sometimes seller or buyer doesnt want to play the negotiation game, could be a lot of reason for that.
I remember I told it was lowest price right just after the buyer tried to lower the price.
I also told it was reg for develop but finally had no time (but always could continue posting) and the buyer could see I had there WP site with some posts and all structure done.
I never tried to play the game this time, not at 03.00 am.
Not always the sale process is the funny game of long negotiation.

ps: finally we made the deal, so the issue is closed

Why the heck should you lower your price any more than you already have. You already gave him a discount from $100 to $60.

I end up with a lot of fools that keep trying to squeeze more. Example.

Me: $10,000
buyer: Can you do $5000
Me: $10,000
buyer: Can you do $7500
Me: $10,000
buyer: Can you do $10,000 and you cover escrow fees?
Me: Yes I can cover escrow, but only if you complete the payment within 24 hours!

That's how negotiation works. If buyer doesn't like it. Take a hike. They can go to another parallel universe to buy a similar name :)

I totally disagree. In an industry where there is only a 1% sell-thru rate, it's not wise to be so flippant towards a potential buyer because you may never find another buyer again. I think it's better to focus of ROI instead of just your asking price. If you paid $1,000 for the domain and someone offers $5,000. That's an amazing ROI. Far too many domainers are driven more by greed and paranoia then sound business practices.

Yes, but it made for a great topic and that was probably his intention.

Please don't take it as an insult as it was not pointed towards you.

In any case, if you were asking $100, and I asked for best price and you told me $60, I would of likely just bought it there and then.

I had here discussion with somebody, I dont know how the discuss became very ugly and all finished with insults.
Anyway, I just forgot about him until.... he registered my username..
I really didnt need it, I had idea to reg it, but preffered to reg my surname finally..
So, who knows why but a few weeks ago I checked my username as domain and...
I almost fall from my chiar from surprise it was registered, I wonder who the heck needed this word and..bingo!
My "fav" NPros member :)
I think he reg it for me, but I dont need it, so now he will always remember me, each renewal.... :)
He punished himself, I just wonder if he reg his enemies or I was the first..
I asked, but he told he likes the name...... :)

Who know why but a few weeks ago I decided to check if mayazir.com is aviable.
I used to check it durign some years, who know why because I never would reg it.
So I was doing it more by curiocity.
I check WHOIS and saw the name of someone from here with who I had ugly discussion in public thread here at NP.
He reg it January, just when we had the discussion... hahahaha
But he punished himself, now he will must to remember me each renewal, because he will never know if I really need the domain or not...

"It's theirs!"

That goes both ways, it's also my money!!! And this is a buyers market. I can take my money to the next domain a lot faster than you can bring that domain to the next buyer.
If it's your money then take it to another seller and forget about the domain! But let me tell you; you can not find two equal domains, you either pay the price and get the domain or leave it and miss the name.

"Ok then, I'll give $10 for VegetableBeefSoup.com"

If you mean this like 'I will give you $10 for sex.com' then that's not what I meant. If you are actually interested in the domain, I would certainly accept numbers less than my $49 asking price -- and very much live up to what I'm saying as a seller.

I would never refuse a sale for $48 or $45, on ego. I'd be happy to have found a buyer.

Are you talking of bulk price or what? You are not even considering how he acquired the domain name.
