Badly Needed..
It is more inline with the early talk as I see it when they were talking about "Cinematic Reality"
...and I'm sure that should please
@cordoba with his format of interest.
But you can't get content development started when you have no developer prototype out there,
so you have to go it alone pretty much, for starters anyway.
'When' they come to market (i'm expecting a dev proto next year.) it will be costly and probably not change the names market as we see it now, or as it will be in 2 years.
The device itself will probably be better than the Hololens consumer updated version that should make it to market at least 1.5 years before hand and be at a much higher cost than the Hololens.
The larger issue is 'CONTENT' and that will be a deciding factor for a successful biz model over time.
COST + AVAILABLE COMPELLING CONTENT vs competition will say if they sell. Better or not.
The reviews are going to be great in a controlled light environment where the room light angles are controlled, but how about outdoors ? They still have a lot of work to do getting this to a portable size.
So a lot of this is dependent on being able to use content developed for/under the WMR platform.
Magic Leap has some very powerful backers and can stand the test of time. But sooner or later it will need profits. The cost and content issues will need to be addressed. A longer term issue before it could have a effect on our names markets if they choose to use the original 'cinematic reality' term, or something new.
Some additional perspective...
By the time this makes it to market, you will also be seeing Rift & Vive v2 and complete eye and face tracking built-into the product. And some additional players with who knows what unique qualities.
Oculus and 'perhaps HTC' are making a VR/MR Goggle of their own that will probably be out by xmas.
HTC will at least have a similar product to GearVR and their own phone with it.
The cost of these VR/MR products are expected under $500. Apple will establish it's market by then.
