Even great gamblers run out of money. He was making easy money with parking and then it died. Parking took no money to create an income stream except for renewal costs. Once parking died DomainNameSales appeared and then Uniregistry because he needed to create a new income stream. It takes big money to run these companies and pay all those employees. Nobody knows how the story ends yet.

There are so many companies on alternate extensions that you can't automatically assume it's on a .com.
Mmmmm... I'd argue that John/Jane Doe lving on Main Street doesn't have a clue to the range of extensions that are available. When they hear or see a domain such as XYZ.Pro their brain is going to "autocorrect" to XYZPro.com* by the time they get to their keyboard.

If they don't find the website they were seeking after hitting "enter", you might get lucky if they even think to try it in dot net or dot org....

(*or the local "primary" extension - i.e. .co.uk, .se, .mx, etc )

The new GTLDs are casinos and there is not an infinite supply of gamblers.

Each NgTLD is a gamble and needs to attract gamblers, meaning domainers. There is not some huge, sudden growth in endusers, and they never asked for NgTLDs.

If 80% of domains are already held by domainers, to see a flow of money to NgTLDs you need existing domainers to spend more, or to abandon many current registrations, or you need to attract new domainers.

Imagine someone said "We're going to let people build 1000 new low stakes casinos in Vegas". Would that mean more spending in Las Vegas or more people going there? I doubt it, especially when the new casinos have weaker regulation and are pretty empty.

Looks like a stylish business model for the Emperor's New Clothes.

He is been in this kind of business for so long; and making money when there were only few extensions around. Again, he has more money to compensate his lost. His buying concept and understanding of such things is solely his choice. Don't blamed the new gTLD, it was YOU who made that.choice

I remember when Rick Schwartz started the .mobi frenzy (or at least contributed to it) by purchasing flowers.mobi for 200K (official version).
So many domainers took that as a vote of confidence when he was in fact gambling... Herd behavior can cause damage.

Now we have another figure to look to: Frank Schilling. Undoubtedly a top domainer but that doesn't mean buying names from him will make you rich. Remember that he's on top of the food chain as a seller of new extensions. Nobody is in a similar position. As a registry operator he's among the few who could make money of new TLDs. And that is not even guaranteed. Even registries are having a bad time.

My impression is that there are more domainers/speculators/chancers/spammers in new extensions, than real end users and this is a big problem imo.

I have not made that.choice

I am a believer in these extensions without even owning one. I would rather invest in things that I have proven to make a return on but that doesn't mean I won't invest in the near future.

This is a perfect scenario that has proven, that no matter how long you have in this industry or whatever you claimed you is; this doesn't mean that your choice and decisions making is going to be successful all the time. And don't blamed nobody, but YOU AND YOURSELF.

He's got his hand in everything. Registry operator, registrar, nTLD investing, legacy gTLD & ccTLD investments, etc.

.CLICK is 6 on most abused TLDs for spam. Lots of people wasting $$.

My understanding in overall business behavior:

A.) there is no right or wrong..
B.) There is zero such thing about how long you have in business of this and that..
C.) positive and negative in business are likes husband and wife; they always have some kinds of issues...
D.) your decision making will impact your overall results
E.) don't blame on others, including new gTLD..it was YOUR decision making..
F.) Understand maket bahavoir, rather than blaming it...
G.) competition is great, this what makes world go around.

Anyone with half a thought can go through the new gTLD list and pick out the losers easily. Who would want a .adult when you can have a .xxx? How many companies are there that would use a .auction? How many audio companies are there to warrant a .audio? How many companies can use a .bet properly much less use it at all? What the hell do you put on a .bid? Who in there right mind would want a .bingo? How many companies would waste their time with a .blackfriday when it's only one day out of the year? I still can't think of one that would use a .blue. Oh yeah, the airline JetBlue. Guess what, they don't even own it. What real company would end their domain with a .business? How many ideas can you come up with to end with a .buzz? Not many. What photographer would use a .camera? .cards? .ceo? .chat? .click? .coach? .codes? .country? .cricket?

That's just quickly going through the list and picking out the junk. Mind you that is only the first 3 letters of the alphabet.

They already have to choose between .PHOTOGRAPHY .PHOTO .PHOTOS, possibly all of them to cover bases. Not kidding, these are actual delegated strings. Not to mention .PICTURES or .PICS. Yeah right.

As a lot of domainers look up to Schilling, this will likely cause a domino effect and massive loads of new G's will be dropped. Many new G's will be on life support pretty soon, me thinks. Which is good because this .cricket, .rodeo, .ceo etc. crap is making my brains hurt.

And they won't even type the domain, they'll Google it. And google have said all along that they ignore what is to the right of the dot.

So googling crazy.golf would return results for crazy.

Most gTLDs indeed are dead, but most of them have never been alive.

I am not sure if Google is entirely ignoring it and even if they did the URL has to appear on the page only once and they would probably serve the correct results. Even if they don't they would probably soon figure out how to do this.

I think the bigger problem is that if you show someone xyz.pro or xyz.photography many simply don't understand that it is an URL and that it can be visited.That is a real problem if you want to run advertising campaigns.

They have said over and over that they are ignoring it. I agree they should recognise a URL but they correct typos and try to interpret intentions. So the moment there is a space or no dot I bet they will not see it as URL, for example if you type crazy golf or crazy. golf.

"All you have to do is look at the join date and Whois in the pro and con camp" what do you mean? I would suggest take a look at the whole picture, rather than part of the picture. Business school and street smart, might help you understand the overall business trend and the markets behavior.
I joined NP in less than a year and start my domain names collection in less than a year, so far in less than a year I had 5 offers all turned them down.
5 offers in less a year? Tell me more. Every week I get a couple offers via Sedo, most are lowballs.

The thing people do not get. Even if new gtlds will succeed by some miracle, they will FAIL DOMAINERS. They will pump up renewal fees at any time ( Thats a complete scam by the way) There is NO WAY for domainers to make money with them because renewal fees can go up 10000000 times at any time!

I honestly believe that one day, given that apps have not yet taken over, end users will be able to register whatever they want in front of the dot to what is in back of the dot. If you fancy ksjsjdhlsjf.iajshdhdjs then so be it. Of course I have no idea the technology behind that capability so it is just a pipe dream.

Exactly. Success of a gtld does not necessarily mean domainer success.
