information Top Topics: A Former Owner Threatens Legal Action; How Do You Sell Your Chinese Domains?...

Spaceship Spaceship
In this week's Top Topics, we have a discussion about the Chinese domain market, and how to sell domains right now. At the moment, the Chinese market seems fairly slow. There are some high value trades going on behind closed doors, but prices are still mostly down. September to December is the renewal period for many domains that were hand registered last year, so it will be interesting to see what the market does in the face of these renewal fees.

Here's this week's Top Topics.

A Former Domain Owner Threatens Legal Action

What would you do if a former owner of one of your domain names threatens legal action to take back possession of the domain? This is the scenario that investor @steely is facing. After buying a domain name for $20 via GoDaddy's Closeout section four months ago, the previous owner has asked the investor to return the domain name to them, citing legal action if their request is ignored.

Since the previous owner is a lawyer, the investor decided to take the legal threats seriously, but what did the investor ultimately decide to do with the domain? Did they return the domain to the previous owner, did they try to resell the name to someone else or did they keep ahold of the name? Read the discussion to find out.

Sedo Parking's Red Flag

This week, several investors noticed that they had problems visiting domain names that are parked at Sedo. According to screenshots within this discussion, using Sedo parking resulted in a warning for a "Deceptive site" in many Internet browsers.

This seems to have been a problem that has been fixed quickly, with Sedo responding to this problem by telling the community their server was placed on a Browsing Security List. Did this affect your domain names? Will this result in a loss of parking earnings?

Have You Sold a New gTLD For Over $100?

A poll and a discussion have been created this week asking the community whether investors have sold a new gTLD name for over $100 this year, and if they have, how many have they sold? The results are interesting to view.

There are stories within the conversation about a .WTF domain selling for $500, a .GROUP for $1,000 and a .EXCHANGE for Β£2,500 ($3,331). There's also one investor that has cleared 15 new gTLD sales this year.

The Strangest Non-Sale of The Week

Here's an entertaining story of a domain sale that almost happened. Domain investor @bluebox thought he'd landed a $3,000 sale of a domain name this week after the potential buyer initiated an Escrow.com transaction after clicking on the "Buy Now" button on the domain's Efty landing page.

However, it turns out that although the deal was for $3,000, the buyer wasn't happy with the $188 Escrow fee that needed to be paid, so the seller gave the buyer the option of paying via PayPal. What happens next is fascinating, and can be read in the discussion, linked to above.

The Best Place to Sell a Chinese Domain Portfolio

How many of you invested in "Chinese premium" domain names in 2015? I should imagine that the majority of readers did, and some of you may have speculated on the more volatile markets of 7N and 5L .COM domains. Domain investor @paolinope29 has a portfolio of around 1,000 7N and 5L domains, and is asking for suggestions on how to sell them.

Suggestions include contacting brokers, NameJet and even publishing the list on the 4.CN marketplace. However, from my own point of view, I think that it's not a great time to sell speculative names. We'll shortly be entering the renewal period for 7N and 5L domains, and it'll go one of two ways: either the prices will be hyped to ensure that a select few investors get a good return, or the domains will be quietly dumped to be replaced by more stable assets. What's your opinion?
