domains Network World: "More Companies Are Going Back to the Future With .Com"

In a post on Network World, Zeus Kerravala takes a look at companies going back to .com in a world of so many choices.

He talks about one his favorite movies being Back to the Future and how many businesses are going back to the future for the .com.

From the article are four choices of companies that moved away only to come back:
  • Just recently, Chinese internet security company Qihoo 360 obtained the 360.com domain name for a whopping $17 million, making the switch from 360.cn. In what is reported to be the most expensive domain sale to date, Qihoo 360 made the investment in order to expand its brand globally. DomainGang.com had some details on the purchase in this article.
  • Last fall, Chinese conglomerate CITIC Group was the first company to move from a .com domain name to a new, "dot-brand" generic domain: limited.citic. It was an interesting idea, but it didn't work and CITIC had to go back to the future after only three months, switching back to citic.com
  • At one time, Qatar National Bank was using the country code domain name of QNB.com.qa, but as DomainNameWire reported, the company dropped a cool million bucks to move away from that and become QNB.com. If you can go back in time and make money on betting on sports, like Biff in the movie, maybe that's not a bad price to pay. But for most companies, that's a huge cost to return to the norm.
  • Sols is another example of a company that recently moved back to .com. The custom 3D-printed orthotic insoles company has switched from Sols.co to Sols.com. There was a time when .co was supposed to be the "next big thing" in domain names, but, as it turns out, it looks like .co actually means ".costsalot"

.com is king forever. One can create "artificial kings" like .co, .me, .club using marketing budgets and paid blog articles but truth will prevail ultimately.

There is only one certainty in life: nothing is certain.

Therefore, nothing is forever.
