information Mike Mann Makes a 324,900% Return on Investment with AnimalsUnited.com

Spaceship Spaceship
Mike Mann, the serial entrepreneur and owner of DomainMarket.com, has announced yet another five-figure domain sale today that sees AnimalsUnited.com sold via Sedo, according to WHOIS details. Mike owns a portfolio of around 250,000 domain names and has previously recorded large sales on domains such as Watches.co and BroadSpectrum.com.

Mike told the world about his latest sale on Twitter, announcing that AnimalsUnited.com had sold for an impressive $39,000. His initial investment? Just $12. According to the tweet, Mike purchased the name in March 2012, meaning that his return on investment is 324,900% in under four and a half years, not including renewal fees and any escrow/commission fees.

The domain name is currently in the process of being transferred to its new owners, as the WHOIS lists Sedo's transfer service as the current registrant. There are no indications as yet to whom the person, or company, is that paid $39,000 for AnimalsUnited.com.

The only other domain that could give an indication as to the buyer is AnimalsUnited.org. The name is currently owned by the CEO of SuperClosets, Kip Andersen. Kip's current company, SuperClosets, manufactures and sells Automated Superponic Grow Systems and Grow Boxes.

Kip also has directed Cowspiracy, an environmental documentary that talks about the effects of animal agriculture on deforestation and pollution. The project was backed by Leonardo DiCaprio, who became executive producer of the Netflix version.

Congratulations to Mike and the buyer of AnimalsUnited.com!

Update on Aug 4, 2016: The domain name has moved out of Sedo's Escrow, and the WHOIS currently shows the owner as "Astramedia", an online marketing agency with offices in Switzerland and Germany.

James we love your articles but this is why newbies get sucked into buying crap names because of misleading headlines such as MIKE MANN MAKES 324,900% RETURN etc. What nonsense. How about posting his REAL ROI in headlines as it relates to his ENTIRE portfolio. I really think you're much too professional to post this kind of garbage without a disclaimer re his entire ROI. Apart from this we love your writings. Thank you.

@London555 - I don't see how writing that headline could be seen as irresponsible/misleading (especially considering I mention that he owns 250,000 domains)? The article is based around one individual sale, rather than a whole portfolio analysis :). He did make a huge profit on a $12 investment - that ROI, which is calculated before any renewals/commissions, is 324,900%. It's impressive for a name that most of us would sell for $5k or less.

But then again, we don't have renewal fees of $2mm+ per year (a rough number based on statistics from an interview I did with Mike). You rely on being confident enough to close this type of deal when you have a portfolio of that size, I suppose.

His prices are fixed, and he has that massive renewal structure with no parking income.

Any random domainer would be happy to get $5K for this domain, if it wasn't a fixed price it probably would have sold for less, I am sure he loses alot of sales with high fixed prices, but then he does hit grand slams like this one.

As long as he makes more than his expenses I guess he wins at the end of the year.

He needs 50 sales like this just to pay for his renewal fees.

wow, 2500,000 domains.. Just curious how he manages all domains.

I would probably price a name like that low $XXX so the seller had to have a good feel as to the buyer's wallet and desire to use that name rather than a myriad of other suitable choices available at lower prices.

I would go for "animals" in this case because you need more than one animal for them to be united.

We own the name GreetingCards in an extension and it's worth much more than the singular.

If the name was unitedanimals.com=> it should be with "s" in the end

animalunited doesn´t really make sense so I would definitely go for animalsunited... Anyway, I think he was lucky ;) Or someone told him the name when they started producing, then its not luck at all ;)

This is surely end user sale, lets see what will come up, congrats to seller and buyer.

Overpriced, but the end user wanted to pay for it, so there you go.

What a mad industry.

It is to assume that this domain will generate more money (even indirect) at the end than the new buyer paid for it.
Otherwise it must be a domain for which the buyer / new owner just has a personal emotional background.

One thing I have found out about this business is that, you have to have a good command of english to succeed regardless of what anybody says.

Good English is indeed basic prerequisite for success in this area :)
