tips How to Create Chinese Meanings for Numeric Domain Names

Spaceship Spaceship
Numeric domain names are very popular in China. One of the primary reasons for their popularity is that they have no intrinsic meaning, and therefore meaning can be added to them. Once a meaning is attached to a numeric domain name, it becomes easy for consumers to remember, and that's why many Chinese companies use this approach.

Here are some examples:
  • 23.cn
    • Chinese name: 爱商 which means "love business"
    • 23.cn is a marketplace for buying and selling businesses
  • 43.cn
    • Chinese name: 时尚 which means "fashion"
    • 43.cn provides celebrity gossip and entertainment news
  • 55.cn
    • Chinese name: 窝窝 which means "group"
    • 55.cn is a Nasdaq-listed group buying service
  • 91.cn
    • Chinese name: 就医 which means "seek medical advice"
    • 91.cn offers medical advice on a variety of health problems
    • Their website is located at www.91.cn

So, how does a numeric domain name get its Chinese meaning? The key is rhyming. Usually, each digit in a number rhymes with multiple Chinese characters. By combining the right characters, you can come up with a meaningful Chinese phrase. Here, I'd like to share with you how I do it, using 20.com as an example.

1. Split the number 20 into individual digits: 2 and 0.

2. For each individual digit, assemble a list of Chinese characters that rhyme with it.
  • 2: (Two), (Child), (Press), (Love), 饿 (Hungry), (Goose), (Safe)
  • 0: (You), (Win), (Can), (Zero), (Tranquility), (Stable)
3. Examine all possible combinations generated from the two lists:

二你 (Two+You), 二赢 (Two+Win), 二能 (Two+Can), etc.
4. Pick combinations that make sense in the Chinese language, and then use Baidu to see if they are already used by companies, which could be potential buyers for the domain name. Here is what I've found, with examples of companies using the exact match of the Chinese phrases.
  1. 20: 爱你 (Love you) → Aiaini.com.cn (health)
  2. 20: 爱赢 (Love to win) → www.Aiwin666.com (betting)
  3. 20: 爱宁 (Love tranquility) → Njankj.cn (electrical equipment)
This type of exercise does require a lot of thinking and Baidu research, but hard work sometimes pays off when potential buyers are uncovered. You may have noticed that the longer a number is, the more character combinations there will be, and so it will require more time to examine all of them.

A major obstacle with this method is that it requires understanding of the Chinese language. However, with the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, I'm quite optimistic that this language barrier will be gone in the future. Meanwhile, it may be easier just working with a native Chinese speaker if you don't know the language.

How can a non-chinese do this?

Exactly why you should read his last paragraph.

At Namescon, I attended the China Boot Camp for registrars. After the session, I asked the speaker if number domains could possibly be developed into a universal "language" (I had heard this earlier), and he said "definitely," and noted that this has already happened in Chinese culture (as we already know with the meaning of 1314 and other important numbers). He suggested that longer number strings could prove to be important, BUT not just random long numbers;t hey must carry meaning and/or patterns and repetitions.

I own several 6N .coms that have specific combined meanings (I did a lot of research before hand registering them).

For example, I have 768248 [dot] com, which means "Fortune all the way, wealthy for two lifetimes" and 248768, which means "Wealthy for two lifetimes, fortune all the way." I have several more 6N .coms that hold extended meanings (which is why I don't automatically shy away from "4").

I also have some longer "meaningful" domains.

4 can be good from what I've read if in pairs, before or after 8 but not after 7,.etc.. but I just want to know if 0 in the beginning is ever a positive thing?

Hi Kassy

Thank you for the awesome post, makes a lot of sense and will definitely be using some of your tips when I'm hunting for domains for the Chinese market.

I was wondering of you could give me your opinion on a domain I purchased recently in hope that I could sell it to a Chinese domainer/investor.

The domain is eight8.info - I have it listed on Sedo.com only and there hasn't been any bids yet. I have it listed for $3888 - Do you think this is a marketable domain and is my price fair or am I clutching at straws?

Look forward to your feedback.

One of the primary reasons for the popularity of Numeric's is that "they have no intrinsic meaning, and therefore meaning can be added to them".

I especially enjoy the flexibility of all these meanings ;)
Thanks for bringing "interesting" to the table.
Cheers

Great work on applying the 4. Research increases the payday for you for sure !

How about something romantic? 0432:你是想爱>You want to love.

The post by @Cynthia on 4 is also interesting.

I like the name, but the .info extension is a challenge. For word+number pattern, I won't go beyond 4C because it's still not common and it may take a while before many end users get used to it. See my Chinese domain name news today on CY8.com and BOSS8.com https://www.namepros.com/threads/chinese-perspective.889841/page-33

Thanks for the post. But am still confuse on the use of number "4" in NNNN domains. I thought its a forbidden number along with 5 when registering NNNN for the chinese market.

Also I would like to really know about alphabets combinations and there chinese meaning. e.g I have yeoop.com, qoinz.com, TVies.com and Nefut.com what could these domains mean in chinese. Thanks in advance.

When I look at a numeric domain name, I don't have any rule that says 0 or 4 or any digit is bad; I examine the whole name to see if any meaning can be attached to it. Unfortunately, this requires understanding of the Chinese language. For 5L or more, normally I don't try to find meaning as it takes a lot of time and the chance of finding meaning is quite small. I do acquire 5L .com but they always contain English words. I don't examine their Chinese meanings.

how long will chinese domain trading be a thing for?
I think besides domain trading, many new investment vehicles will also pop up in the future.

Hey Kassey Lee!
Would you happen to know why Guta is suggesting this ? Thanks,

There will be massive dropping of domain names especially in the last quarter of 2016.

I'm reading it as: If the many long numbers purchased in bulk transactions in the last quarter of 2015 cannot find buyers within a year they will be dropped.

However, the fundamentals of the Chinese domain name market remain sound. Last years domain name registrations in China grew 50% from 21m to 31m, and the potential is 500m long term. Looking at the bigger picture, only 25% of companies in the US have a website and a mere 2% in India. The future of domain names is great!

I'm good on +++ for 2016, interesting to note bulk buyers have a 1yr term for long. as in 6,7,8+ Characters?
Is there any word on bulk buyer term for 3,4,5 Characters or are they in the long hold investment pool?
Also, there could be a few platforms out there willing to purchase the unsold inventory to replenish eh?
