information Exclusive Interview with a $20 Million Dollar Domain Investment Fund

Spaceship Spaceship
Last week, 19 year old Erwan Kina (@ErwanKina) made an announcement that his investment group will be acquiring over $20 million worth of domain names in 2016, with their focus being on buying short .COM domains. Why are they putting so much money into domain names this year? Who are these investors? What plans does the group have for their acquisitions?

We find out the answers to these questions and much more in this exclusive first interview with Erwan in which he reveals that his group has already bought over $2.5 million worth of domain names in 2016.

NP: Can you tell us about yourself and how you came to be involved in domain names?

Erwan: I’m French, and I’ll be 20 years old next month. In January 2015, I was really not happy in my law school in Lyon, France. I was motivated not to spend the next 7-8 years of my life working on something I didn’t like to have a degree I didn’t want. I’ve decided to stop my studies in order to start a new entrepreneurial project. I was able to do so because I made some money a year before by hosting parties in the best night clubs of my city while I was still in high school. I knew I had about 6 months before I had to start making a living with my new project.

I’ve had the great idea to Google "how to make money online" and on the bottom of a list I read was "Sell websites and domain names." That’s how I discovered the top 100 reported sales of all time, and I was fascinated. My dream was always to negotiate these kinds of deals. So I told myself, "this business is for me; don’t quit until you are number 1." At that time, I had the choice between becoming a football (soccer) player agent, like Jorge Mendes, or a domain expert. I chose domaining because we don’t need any licenses to start.

I have to thank Ali Zandi (@Zandibot) too. I saw this guy made himself six figures in six months after discovering the domain name industry. From that point, I knew I had no excuses. Hard work, hard work, hard work, and a lot of perseverance.

Today I’m blessed to work full-time with my great partners. I’m learning so much with them. We have already made great deals. We will keep winning every day!

NP: We noticed that you now have a $20 million fund to buy domain names. Is this from one investor or several?

Erwan: Honestly we believe we will acquire more than $20M of domains in 2016; this is just the start. It’s the amount we are sure at 100% we will at least invest.

One of my partners, Sharjil Saleem built a worldwide network of really big players over the years with G. Chang. He’s from Dubai, and other partners are from China, UAE, and Germany. We will meet to discuss our next goals several times during the year. Our next meeting is scheduled in February in Dubai. All the investors are domain experts.

I’m in charge of finding the best opportunities and closing deals. I will also broker our best domains very soon. Sharjil was my best client a few months ago. We made awesome deals. He then offered me the opportunity to cooperate more seriously with the network he had built. In any business, you have to find a guy who can help you improve yourself every day. The right mentor shows you how to perform and you can win big from it. In return, you have to invest yourself at 100% for the success of your group.

(Editor's note: The credibility of Sharjil Saleem has been called into question and caution may be warranted.)

NP: What type of domain names are you currently acquiring?

Erwan: Only .com and a few types of .net (very short .net). In .com, we invest in short domains, LL to LLL, and some 4-Letter Chips too.

The new goal is to acquire about 20 3-Letter .com domains at fair prices. We are also still buying some 4-Letter .com Chips. We will acquire some 4-Letter .net Chips, too. This year we’d also like to have more LL.com domains in our portfolio. Very soon, we will put one of ours for sale.

NP: Can you reveal any of your recent acquisitions and their prices?

Erwan: We never report our acquisitions, but I will keep NamePros informed when we put our best domains up for sale. So you will have an idea of our portfolio. For January, we're focused on acquiring huge names. In February, we will start making money.

In 2016, we have already invested more than $2.5M.

NP: Do you plan on holding these domain names, or will they be resold quickly?

Erwan: Some are meant to be kept a while, while others we are motivated to close deals in the short term.

We have no problem waiting for the right offer for our domains. We will never sell in a rush. We prioritize end-users, but we have no problem selling to a domain investor if we think we can make a good deal.

We see and appraise a lot of domains every day and if the price is more than fair, we will buy. We don’t necessarily have a time schedule for each domain, but we are confident they will sell sooner or later for a profit.

NP: What percentage of the domains that you'll buy with the $20 million do you expect to sell to end-users vs other investors?

Erwan: We first and foremost focus on potential end-users. If we have no active leads, then we are happy to deal with an investor as long as we make some money.

NP: Do you expect to make a profit on every domain you purchase or do you expect a few big sales to make up for the majority that may not sell for a profit?

Erwan: I always invest to win. "A penny saved is a penny saved." I take our investments very seriously. I want to be one of the leaders of this business for the next 5 years. To do so, I have to take calculated risks and make great investments for the guys who trust me. To sell, you need to believe in what you offer, so you need to believe in what you acquire in the first place.

Our strategy is to win on every decision we make.

Erwan: Thanks for the interview. For anyone interested, I can be reached on NamePros and LinkedIn.

Thanks to Erwan for taking the time to speak to us. It sounds like it's going to be a very big year for him and his group of investors in terms of both their acquisitions and sales, so expect to see domain sales from this investment group being revealed in the near future.

Update on Jan 22, 2016: We thought we had a credible source when this article was first published, but we've been unable to verify it with 100% certainty. We will do more research and provide updates.

Update on Aug 21, 2016: The credibility of Sharjil Saleem has been called into question and caution may be warranted.

Sounds like a smart young man with motivation and a bright future.

To me it looks like a very, very young man with motivation and NO future in domaining ...
A 20 years old guy that started one year ago in domaining is investing this year 20 million dollars ...
Hmmm ... don´t feel it :-o

Erwan represents a group of investors - all experienced within the domain industry, who are acquiring $20m worth of names.

I love success stories that confounds the idea that you need to have started in the 90's or early 2000's to be a big cat in the domain business. However, this story is not fully developed:

  1. No millionaire investor is just gonna team with you without seeing some serious potential and value in doing so. So what is your story on how you got a name for yourself? Basically what were your first sales or strategy that made you profits and drew eyes to you?
  2. From the above question, how does that directly connect or allowed you to meet these guys? Did you already have a rich well connected buddy who told your about coaching and linked you with these other folks?
  3. I found out about domaining online too so I'm not doubting your story in that regards, but it needs more development or clarity. Example: A namepros member name i think Ali Zandi. who is the Director of Sales and Acquisitions at Perception.com(be remodeled), a private domain name investment fund.

"In his first year in the domain industry, Ali facilitated over $1 million in sales and more" Basically He told his story clear leaving no holes: about how he used flippa and sold in bulk and went from there to the point where Flippa asked in on board then his transition to Perception etc... His story is not just a fairy tale dream of sudden dubai and chinese and German investors coming out of nowhere and with what motivation? Ali Story was cleary and new domainers could follow in his footsteps. Again I'm not saying this to accuse but to say: Clarify and develop the story..\
Cheers

This is an awesome article. I admire you sharing your story. Based on how you answer those questions I can tell you are way beyond your years. It helps to look at the path of someone like Ali and follow in his footsteps. Congrats bro and look forward to great accomplishments this year.

No truer ways to describe the emboldened. Kids like this are like 1 in 10. I have only met a few in such age bracket. One is a Nigerian brother with a mind of a 30 y.o and does so well flipping currencies like the George Soros on forex market. He is only 22.

You got to respect such minds when you see one. Hat off to you, Erwan.

And I learned something which further buttress this: "if you want to go far, go alone; if you want to go farther, go in a group"

I think you shouldn't hold back your displeasures in a matter like this because history will prevail in the long run. Therefore, say whatever you have to say.

sorry brother. Domainers are highly intelligent people with good logic thinking capabilities. Somehow, they decided not to use it here.

It is always good if inexperienced people with a lot of money enter into our field. Otherwise, who will buy my pigeon shit.

Experienced domainers with a lot of money - no use for people like me with pigeon shit domains.

Haven't checked whois, don't know if those are what they bought, or belong to the represented group of investors, but even getting those kind of names to represent is impressive.
That only means that those domains are brokered by DomainPromotion.com but brokerage agreements are NOT always exclusive so the same domains can be brokered by outher brokers as well ...
It´s tru the guy is listed as "Domain Agent" on the website but the ABOUT US page caught my attention with this description:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT DOMAINPROMOTION
Our team built one of the most valuable domain names portfolio through MyName LTD. In this industry since 1999, we are used to make great deals every weeks whether we acquire or sell premium domains. We created Domain Promotion to help domain owners to sell and high-end users to invest in the right domains for their businesses.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1999 this guy was 3 years old so there is somenthing unclear inside this story ... Call me suspicious or whatever you want, but all this story is out of reality ... There may be another story behind all this, but this one is incredible ...

Quick reply because I have other things to do:

I've created DomainPromotion.com for my partner Luigi @DomainEmpire.com last April.

Luigi is doing something great right now: he teams up with external investors to manage their domain investments. I believe it's a great innovative way to make business in this industry. Thanks to Luigi a lot of guys who didn't know about domaining will now invest a lot of money in this market. His group acquired 77.com recently. His new company is based in London. Luigi is the first successful domainer who trusted me, we will do a lot of business together in the coming months. He's a full-time domainer since 1999.

this story is out of reality

The reality I've been offered to live in was not really appealing, I decided to create a new one. I believe that's what entrepreneurs are meant to do.

When I say: There may be another story behind all this, but this one is incredible ... I mean:

*You are not the one who is investing $20 mollion dollars in domain names as your NP signature shows and you are promoting ... and for sure that you are not the one brokering those domains listed at www.DomainPromotion.com

People are saying that "experienced" investors are trusting you a $20 million fund to invest in PREMIUM domain names ... you say that you spend few minutes a day to make some decent $95 flips ???

All this is very hard to believe my friend ...

And let me tell you that even if you where a GENIUS it´s almost impossible to reach in only 1 year time what you are claiming to be: "An experinced domain broker" ... also people that trust a $20 million dollar fund to a 20 years old guy with 1 year experience in domaining and who discovered the industry by having the great idea to google "how to make money online" and on the bottom of a list I read "Sell websites and domain names". Erwan did a great job in promoting himself

and a very poor job in telling his story

dreams are dreams
plans are plans
and hopes are hopes

and success is something very different

invoking hope and visions
into fellow domainers
who may be unexperienced

will lead them to wrong decisions
and expectations

which really is no good outcome
-always do due dilligence guys-

a story is a story
nothing more

I would also like to add that I am happy for every new million entering our industry. But I also must say say that this whole interview was one of the lowest quality. Sorry James, you are doing a great work, but not this time, sorry. Rather make another interview with Ali. I really amire his intelligence and determination. I do know excatly what he did to achieve this. I remember irritant kc simething showing everywhere, but he had the attitude and determination and after only one year he dont need to be iirritant anymore with his promotion as he became interesting now. Ali, say if I am wrong, but I believe you started about a year or two ago with les than $1k and now you are owning lll.coms.
Erwan, connect with with Ali and back him wih $20 million, you will have $5M in less than a year, and he and your investor will make even more.

I am now in the mood which @HireDomains often mentions so sorry for mistakes in writing

To conclude, dont make announcments like we will invest $20M+ this year, especially with your domaing CV. (sorry). Announce when you sell something for millions and then present yourself like you did ib this interview.
Give any of intelligent domainer $20M and they will make $40M by the end of year. Give any intelligent and experienced domainer $20M and he will make $100M+ vy the end of year.

This just confirmed what I wrote in my post here: https://www.namepros.com/blog/exclu...in-investment-fund.912489/page-5#post-5289366

Domains are actually very transparent business.

Many of us know each other or saw other domainers or domain holders in whois so many personal names from the industry are known to us, just as many premium domains. Many of us are aware of almost any $10000+ worth domain name ownership change so it is not a good idea to try to fool us.

Like I already wrote, there is nothing wrong in acting like a broker, but it is very wrong to claim you are the owner of domains that belong to someone you never had any contacts with.

1 year experience in domaining could be enough in some cases, but it was obviously not enough in this case.

Unfortunately the number of frontrunners, sharlatans and imposters have increased over the past years with so many new folks joining the Domaining game and trying to find a shortcut to quick riches.. stories like these are going to become the norm i am afraid..

3 Months Has been passed and @ErwanKina woukd you like to share with us any update about the purchase or sale you have made so far in 2016.
There is a saying i learned while living in the Villages of Bali from the elder farmers ...
{ Young rice stalks who stick there head straight up have nothing ,
those stalks who are laden with rice bow their heads to the ground with the weight of their
bounty having authentic humility .}

Take this into perspective with $20M something godaddy was able to buy Marchex portfolio, which had beijing.com, and 200,000 other names in it.

I see a comment above by tld_org where it states this person is attempting to sell oxuo.com for $320, quite frankly these are the type of names you should be buying for such a fund for under $300 or so if you can.

I saw the headline $20M to spend etc... well there are many big players who have great portfolios who will discount them for a very low cost value basis, shouldn't be hard to acquire a great portfolio if you really have $20M to spend.

I´m NOT jealous. Just surprised to see how easy, experienced domainers, believe this dream-stories newbies are sharing here ...

same thoughts. Maturity and experience - both are missing.

No jealousy. Good luck to the kid.

Age has nothing to do with domaining. You don't have to be in your 40s, get married and have 3 kids to be an experienced domainer, hell domaining is not rocket science and everyone can learn in a year more than enough to get some basic experience. The kid is young and smart, hats off @ErwanKina hope you'll make it big time!
I don´t say that age has to do with domainig or that you have to be in your 40s, get married and have 3 kids to be an experienced domainer ...
What I am saying, domaining like any outher business need time to learn about it, in order to be successful ... I have 17 years living full-time from domaing and I believe I still have to learn ...
So I really doubt that a 20 years old guy with 1 years in domainig has the experience to manage a $20 million fund from "experienced" investors in order to create benefit. I´m sorry but I really doubt.

Just a quick note to say thank you @James Iles for taking the time of publishing this interview. And thanks for the nice words everyone, truly appreciated!
For the most skeptical, I understand your doubts but I won't invest my time proving you I'm f***ing good at what I do. And please don't judge me by my losses because I won't have any :D I trust my partners to make the right decisions with me. I'm very well surrounded.

And yes @tld_org you noticed the oxuo.com thread I've published earlier today.
On my free time when I'm not making deals for my group.. I'm making deals for fun. Actually I just closed a deal for oxuo.com at $375 thanks to you (the buyer contacted me just after you commented) and made myself a decent $95 flip. I will always spend a few minute per day flipping domains really quickly because if you make $150/day this way, at the end of the year that's a $54,750 bonus.
I can negotiate a 7 figures deal and still have a lot of fun making myself a +$100 bonus while eating some sushis. That's a great satisfaction! :D
To me sound´s very funny that someone managing a $20 million USD fund is spendind few minutes per day to make a decent $95 flip ... Very funny ... This is science-fiction ...

3
•••
There is nothing wrong with someone making $95 flip IMO, even FX would take that money than making a lose :)
I just don´t believe that somebody in charge of a $20 million Investment fund is spending his time in doing $95 flips ... Just don´t believe that man ... Sorry ... Remember Ali Zhandi ??? He came into the industry in 2014 but hes history was clear and weel explained, this is more like a self-promoting story, a strategy often used by newbies ...
