I would like to inform members of a scam that is being sent to physical addresses of domain owners.

The SCAM is being run by a company calling themselves Domain Registry of Canada.

www.droc.ca

Below I will type the exact wording of the letter my sister in law was just sent. As her husband recently passed away I changed her whois info for her. Below is the letter they sent her.

DOMAIN NAME EXPIRATION NOTICE

As a courtesy to domain name holders, we are sendin you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to epire in the next few month's. When you switch to the Domain Registry of Canada, you can take advantage of our best savings. Your registrations for: lakelandharbor.com will expire on September 23,2004 ACT TODAY!

Domain Name: Lakelandharbor.com
Reply Requested By: August 19, 2004

You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights to it on the web, and now is the time to transfer and renew your name from your current Registrar to the Domain Registry of Canada. Failure to renew your domain name by the expiration date may result in a loss of your online identity making it difficult for your customers and friends to locate you on the web.

Privitization of Domain Registrations and renewals now allows the customer the choice of registrars when initially registering and also when renewing a domain name. Domain name holders are not obligated to renew their domain name with their current registrar or with the Domain name Registry of Canada. Review our prices and decide for yourself. You are under no obligation to pay the amounts stated below, unless you accept this offer. This notice is not a bill ( BUT IS SURE LOOKS LIKE ONE ) it is rather an easy means of payment should you decide to switch your domain name registration to the Domain Registry of Canada.

Term Existing Domain Period Covered Price

1 yr Lakelandharbor.com 9/23/04 - 9/23/05 $40.00
2 yr $70.00
5yr $160.00

The following other names are currently available at a rate of 70.00 per 2 yrs

lakelandharbor.net
lakelandharbor.org

Contact customer service 1 866 434 0212

And then at the bottom of the page is an official looking bill complete with amount due and credit card number area ect

My sister in law just lost her husband 2 1/2 months ago, He was my wife brother this woman is in her late 50's and knew nothing about what her husband was doing with his website. Now that he has past away she wanted to keep his site alive in an effort to try and make whatever dream he had for it come true. It is my opinion that companies such as this DROC must be put out of business for trying to scam people out of their hard earned money. I will also hope that all search engines crawl this thread so I can inform anyone else who recieve this blatent fraudulent letter from this company that a domain registration or renewal only cost between 4.99 to 8.88 some extensions other than .com .net . org . us cost a little more but NOT $40.00

If you have recived an Official looking notice from these fraudsters report it to your local police. I will in turn have some of my friends that my wife doesnt like me associating with have a look at their website and hopefully take it offline.

Hey AdSenseGuy. I am from Canada & have over 400 domains so these clowns send me snail mail all the time. I took a look the first time. I saw their pricing & knew they were trying to scam me. They don't fool the experienced but they are very dangerous to the unsuspecting which is whom these dic*less maggots prey on.
Good luck in nailing them. (rusty nails I hope!)

Jim
