Your experiences with PayPal?

I recently read in another thread something that prompted a question from me.

The user there was weary of using PayPal and said for domaining its a poor choice.

I was recently considering switching my method of payment to PayPal, however I would like to get more information on how they handle domain disputes.

My understanding is, if you can provide proof that you pushed the domain, then PayPal won't allow a chargeback.

Has anyone had good/bad experiences with PayPal? Please share.

Paypal does not protect against virtual goods (eg. domains). However, I have yet to experience a chargeback on purchases on NP.

Does "protect against" mean that the buyer will not be able to get their money back regardless?

In one case someone who bought a script from me got their money back after I sent it to them...

It means that the buyer can chargeback, and Paypal will allow it without checking.

Although if buying here at namepros members with good ratings are mostly a safe bet

Wise advice. MassPay is the only Paypal option worth using for larger transactions with people you're not sure you can trust.

+1 , not to mention the fee savings using MassPay.

I have never had any problems with paypal and my domain sales.Works perfect for me and many people don't know about charge back. Also I have a business account to protect myself further. So my business is specified and they know that I sell domain names and that they are "digital goods".

A chargeback is a credit card 'feature', yes.

However that doesn't stop hackers and fraudsters from hacking a PayPal account and buying a domain.

Then, once they have the domain, the owner will probably end up realising the account was hacked and get back into it. They'll notice a bunch of unauthorised payments and dispute them. Since they were hacked (it'd be easy enough to tell; IP address from a completely different place, perhaps erratic/robotic login times etc), PayPal will reverse the charges.

Then you have no money and the hacker/fraudster has your domain.

I'm not sure if you can dispute an unauthorised payment via MassPay? I'd assume so, but haven't look into it.

Either way, PayPal aren't a proper merchant for virtual goods and so other methods (if possible) are best. MassPay is a good option, as is using an Escrow.

You really should know and trust a buyer to accept payment via Paypal. PP will protect the Buyer a lot more then the seller. Once you "push" your domain name, you have very little chance at getting it back.

Scarily enough, there was also a case before (although on DigitalPoint, which isn't a trust-worthy board overall) where a well known member (with 60+ feedback etc) had his account hacked, and the hacker bought domains through it etc.

So in reality, if the price is big, you should be very, very cautious indeed of using PayPal. Or use something like Moniker Escrow who accept PayPal, and if a scam happened, the domain will be returned back to you.

Have lost 10K or so in chargebacks in past 5 years. But then the guys were the suckers. Not paypal. So my experience is great with them.

I use paypal for small amounts and have not had any problems but if its significant $ use Escrow.com and protect yourself

Also, what if I require the buyer to put in the user notes "Thank you 100% satisfied this transaction went very well"

And, is there any way that you can receive a record from the registrar or something about the actual details of your domain push/transfer?

I do not have much complaints about them. Only once when they froze my account for investigation accidentally whereby there is nothing that happened. Had me called up to Singapore and they unfroze it due to error
