Well, actually unless you equate Islam and Al Qaeda as being one and the same, I wouldn't agree.. I don't believe Al Qaeda represents mainstream Islamic beliefs or culture, do you?

Well, obviously Al Qaeda is anything but what Islam stands for, you are in that. But some of the points refered (or mocked with) general islamic customs. I did not think you were trying to make an islamophobic statement, but not all points in the joke were clearly referring to only Al Qaeda.

12. you strap a remotely detonated bomb to your mentally ill sister and blow up a market/cafe full of humans that do not embrace your views.

13. you preach hatred, coordinate terroristic acts, and seek refuse, and even fire weapons from religious buildings that are over 2000 years old.

I agree with this a bit.

You also just simplify the issue(we're talking religion, opporession, nationalism, insurgency, war, etc) and focus on the negative. Your comments are quite true, but it exposes a bit of a lack of understanding of their "frame" of thinking, which is good to have to really understand these types of issues in our world today.

Problem is that you guys clearly realise Al Qaeda has nothing to do with real islam. Unfortunately lot of people don't. I ran a political messageboard in Dutch and gave it up because of the constant anti-islamic statements which made me sick of disgust. Some people just don't see the difference between the terrorists on TV and the real muslims. Some see the hijab as a symbol of terrorism... I think those are all sad people with tunnel visions, but they worked on my nerves that much that I gave up the messageboard I started. I felt my good intentions to give people a platform for serious debate, were about for racist and and anti-islamic nonsense.

In my native country (which I left behind 3,5 years ago) islamophobia is one of the biggest cancers in society and this really fills me with shame. I have a big passion for the Middle East (I lived in Turkey by the way, fell in love with the place and would really like to move there again) and have many muslim friends. I am atheist myself but respect Islam a lot, and I really think the islamophobia in Europe is disgusting to the bone.

So sorry if I overreacted, but this sort of jokes make me feel uncomfortable. I know the people posting in this thread had no racist intentions and from your comments I can conclude you all know that Al Qaeda and true Islam are different things. But sadly many people don't want to know the difference and are full of hatred towards Islam. This fills me with shame and anger, and I must admit jokes about subjects like this make me feel a tad uncomfortable.

So sorry for overreacting, however I hope that everybody reading this thread will realise that it were jokes. Unfortunately I know several people who would take this seriously and that is really sad. But maybe I overreacted, it's just a sensitive issue to me. I am not a muslim, but I have a lot of respect for Islamic culture, and a passion for the Middle East. But apologies if I overreacted.

First of all Turkey is a secular country and it does not represent Middle East in whole. Turks enjoy life; they do drink, smoke and go clubbing as much as a regular European does.

The problem is not with religion or with people, its with those who make the religion look barbaric. There are many religions out there, and most of them sooner or later understood that you can force other nations to submit to your own rules. Here in US many ppl make fun of Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Krishna and so on, and guess what ?? We don't see anybody burning cars, killing cops or even killing their own kids for apostasy. But try to say something about terrorists, many organization and people come screaming "Islamphobia, Islamophobia". Take a look at the following picture (1:06 in particular) and you tell me what should one think after watching this.

Just in case. The above is my opinion and NamePros Administration is not ressponsible in anyway with members postings. :))

I know Turkey is secular, I know how Turks live. I have lived in Turkey, so obviously I know what you are talking about. Point is:
- more Middle Eastern nations are rather secular (Israel, Lebanon -especially Beirut-, and to lesser extend Jordan and certain parts of the Emirates)
- as much as I disgree with what is shown in that film on YouTube, this is in no way representative for the real islamic life

As I said, sorry if I overreact, but it is a sensitive issue to me given my love for the Middle East and given my several Muslim friends (who, let that be clear, all find terrorism as disgusting as any westerner does. No real muslim will support terrorism, if he does so then he is not a real muslim even if he will try to convince you otherwise)

Islam is no more violent than any other religion. I respect Islam as much as other ways of life. The islamophobia that conquers Europe is really making me sick, just like racism in general.

Sorry if I inadvertently offended anyone, but this was clearly meant to be a joke directed toward Al Qaeda and not meant to reflect on anyone's Islamic beliefs.

I, too, respect other's beliefs to worship as they wish, so long as no one is harmed in the process. Being raised Catholic, I can point to Caholocism's bloody and violent past as indicative of what happens when good (or misguided) religious intentions go wrong.

But this wasn't meant to be a religious discussion thread.. just a tension breaker, not a tension maker.

I never questioned your intentions, unfortunately I know too many people who badmouth islam with every opportunity and who are so uneducated about real Islam that they would take this sort of jokes for something serious. I never suggested you had that intention. I am not sure if the US has any issues with Islam but here in Europe there is a huge problem with Islamophobia. It makes me sick and ashamed to be European when I see how my native country and several other EU states are growing more and more racist and claustrophobic. Problems I never encountered while living in Turkey, even as an outsider I felt extremely welcome, if only in Europe people would have the same attitude...
