Yahoo seems to have a new addition in their url. I noticed today that as I was opening new browsers, that Yahoo's domain now reads - m(.)www(.)Yahoo(.)com!. Are they now making their site mobile compliant universally now?? Interesting why they added that 'm' in before the 'www'. Anyone else notice this?

I tried using the URL and all it did was redirect me back to Yahoo.com.

It's weird I guess, as I get that address on one computer when I open a browser, but not on the another computer! I even tried it again! hmmmm

I'm using a MAC with the Firefox browser. That might have something to do with the different results that I have.

That's really strange. I've never heard of a site doing that to be honest.

I've never heard of that..

Code:
When I go to m.www.yahoo.com it redirects me to http://www.yahoo.com/?nm=1

I don't see an m in front of the www.

Every so often I'll sign in to my yahoo email account like any other day, but once I sign out it defaults to the "m" version of yahoo and it will stay that way until I delete the yahoo cookie(s).

Haven't been able to figured out what triggers it...

What's also weird with this, is that on the one computer that gives me the 'm.www' url, I get a different Yahoo front page (with a purple YAHOO! logo), than the other computer that doesn't note the 'm.www' in Yahoo's url (a red YAHOO! logo)! I've run a scan on both computers, so all is ok there. Does no one else see this?? (i'm hoping I haven't fallen into a Yahoo black hole!)

So what does it mean, and how do companies put in letters or numbers with the WWW? Soem of USbanks's pages start with www4.usbank.com/..... And Bank of America does the same thing with a www2.bankofamerica.com/.....

What's that all about?

I don't see that, but I do see the have a mobile compliant site at us.m.yahoo.com. If it looks different to some than others, they probably have some logic that detects user location and browser type to send them to the appropriate web server and page. This tells me that probably if you type yahoo.com in a mobile browser, it send you to the m.yahoo.com address. They go further by detecting country from the IP or phone number and sending it to us.m.yahoo.com. Actually yahoo.mobi redirects to that url too.

Greengambler, generally those companies that have www2, www3 etc. are using load balancing servers. www2 might be one physical web server and www3 would be another. Their DNS would stagger traffic over several mirror servers based on load, geography, or some other criteria.

Thanks man! I've been wondering.

Yahooโ„ข ... like most major corporations ... has adopted and promoted its "M Dot" for some time; :yell:
Or type this URL into your phone's browser:
m.yahoo.com

In addition to the TOP .COM brands now using their respective "M Dots", I'm seeing this adoption and development at the local level, as well ... easily and consistently branded for use by those that are "on the go"! :talk: :imho:

If you notice, I said the url was - 'm.www', not 'm.yahoo'. I get a different Yahoo front page and in different colors. Purple. I do notice on this screen though that there is a link that says 'Return to Classic Yahoo.com'. So maybe they have variations of home pages. Anyone konw how I can take a screen shot so I can post it??

And please, tell the whole story, not just your one-sided version! "The top brands use all the variations not just m-dot's!!"

That is the full story ... here are just a few prime examples;
m.yahoo.com
m.google.com
m.ebay.com
m.facebook.com
m.youtube.com
m.cnn.com
m.wikipedia.org

It's clear ... major corporations, including TOP online brands, have adopted their respective "M Dots" as it provides the most succinct, cost-efficient, and branding consistency for its audience that is busy and "on the go"! :talk: :imho:

"M Dot" means "Mobile"! :yell:

Just hit your Print Screen/PrntScrn button, then open your favorite graphics program (Irfanview is my favorite for quick and easy things like this) and paste it in. Save it and you are good to go! (Though you might want to reduce it's size to save on bandwidth.)

Yes Jeff you are 'fair and balanced'.

You forgot to also note:

Yahoo.com/mobile
Google.com/mobile
ebay.com/mobile
facebook.com/mobile
youtube.com/mobile
cnn.com/mobile

oh, and let's forget...
FoxNews.mobi!!!

So once again, you are pointing out - not a definitive course or standard, but what you want to point out to make it seem like you know what you're talking about. But, as usual, you don't!, and you just mislead with false facts!!
There is no standard for mobile access yet set, no matter what you want to 'think' there is.

It really wouldn't be so bad here, if you'd just be fair with your postings and not insinuatory and 'all knowing' just for your personal pleasures.

In your case, m stands for MY. This has been around a while. m.www.Yahoo.com is a customizable Yahoo. Kind of like when you customize your google page.

However, www.m.yahoo.com is the MOBILE version of the website. Don't get these two confused.

FoxNews.mobi!!!

^ I fail to see how this relates to the topic of the adopted "M Dots" ... as it's simply an undeveloped redirect to: foxnews.proteus.com :| :red:

There is no standard for mobile access yet set, no matter what you want to 'think' there is.

Every day, more and more folks are using their super cool iPhones (and other smart devices) ... that is the soon-to-be 'standard' ... and here in the interim there is NO DOUBT that corporations and the TOP major brands (as I've highlighted above; such as m.yahoo.com) have adopted and are utilizing their respective "M Dots" for near-term efficiencies and obvious .COM branding consistency IMHO. :gl:
