Well the .WS registry has been in the news this week for releasing all 5N to 20N combinations last night, and 2 and 3 character .ws will be available later in Feb with new pricing scheme.

.WS registry also has a presence on NP now:
    https://www.namepros.com/threads/ws...-ws-domains-will-be-released-tomorrow.915224/

Obviously the China story may be creating a new market for short .WS domains. ALL of the NNNN.ws were bought out over three days this past December according to thedomains.com blog.

I registered some 5N.ws last night when they were released, anyone else stepping into .WS now?

Anyone know the status of 5N.ws? Wondering if there was a run on them when they opened up last night? Seems a lot of good patterns are taken.

I think their new pricing is better for the 2 and 3 character .WS. It is a high initial fee, but then afterwards its just regular renewal rate, whereas before it used to be the premium price up front and also for renewals. At least I think that's how I read it.

There is obviously demand for short domains these days. Easy to say "buy .com's" but if people don't have $5,000 for a NNNNN.com, or $50,000 for a NNNN.com, they have to look at alternatives within budget. Speculation on reg fee short domains has paid off for me so far in other extensions. WS also has some meaning in Chinese which may make it attractive to that market. They bought out all 4N in December so that's a good sign.

There have been many buyouts lately and there will be many drops too.
I would spent $5000 for a good .com over $5000 for a .ws most endusers will too. New gtlds coming out all the time will water down all the other gtlds and drive .com demand and prices higher.

We still don't know what they are asking for these 2-3ch .ws
They could price them at $50,000. Will be interesting to see what the registrar thinks they are worth.

One nice thing about .WS is that you can do an account push at Godaddy.

I don't believe in a comeback of .ws.
.ws has had its time but that was long ago.
I've never seen a failed extension coming back from the ashes.

    .ws = .was :)

I know you're focusing on numerics and short names but still.

PS: I see a lot of people buying short names in ccTLDs, but what I see is the Chinese buying available handregs. Not buying from domainers. I'm not sure it's a good idea to invest heavily in this area. Also, if you are solely dependent on Chinese buyers that won't come, you'll end up with a pile of useless domains.

I don't think .ws will make a big comeback in most of the world, but in China it can. Remember they made .cc and .xyz have value.

I have short .co handregs from last year that Chinese buyers have been happy to purchase at $150 to $450 each. If it's a domain they want, they will buy it and all you have that are like it. Everything. So to say that Chinese buyers won't want your hand regs at some point just isn't true. In fact, I think domainers that have been around a while can see what the Chinese are buying or have bought, and try to anticipate where they will go next. The 4N.ws just got bought out in Decemeber. Any of us here could have taken some of those in November. In hindsight it makes sense that they got taken out, given how other extensions got taken last year for short domains.

Seeing the Chinese buying up thousands of short domains in various extensions shows the huge demand and budgets they are working with.

    I appreciate that.
I mean, they may be buying .com and to some extent .co/.cc, but that doesn't mean they will buy anything. So I would be more careful in the extensions that the Chinese have ignored so far.
There was a big Chinese rush on .cm recently, but I still wouldn't buy .cm domains.

If it is short, I am not surprised at anything they buy anymore.

There are some extensions I won't touch either. If .cm was run by a reputable registry, I would consider it, but I haven't heard good things about how .cm is run.

I can see .ws gaining traction in China, because WS has meanings in Chinese.

For other extensions, if they are short (2 to 3 character), reasonable reg fee, available at main registrars, easy to push/transfer, and no restrictions on ownership, I think they have potential. Many registries are probably catching on (like .ws) and we will likely be seeing more of the domain market catering to China, and making it easy to trade domains globally.

There are 1000's of 6n.com for cheap in aftermarket.
Those are a much better bet than NNNN.whatever
To spent $1000's on one NNN.ws is a pass from me but if you guys can make money...do it all day long.

I would probably rather have something like 2188.ws than 732104.com

If you say 4N.ws vs 6N.com it totally depends on what the numbers are.

I agree, but you have to remember the general public/end user will always prefer .com

Just because it has "8" isn't going to fly with all the world just because china likes "8's"

You better have a very very premium 4N.ws to go against an ok 6N.com if you want someone to buy it that doesn't understand chinese numerology

There are already hundreds of tlds and they all compete with .com so it better be the best numbers or there is no competition.

No trying to be harsh on your .ws but just want you to not put to much cash in one pot, which it doesn't look like you are with some of the domains you have listed there.

I agree with being cautious, but to me this short domain buying is all about demand from China. So if China likes it, or I think they will come to like it, that's good enough for me right now. Remember, the Chinese population is the same as USA + Europe + Canada, it is a huge market. And despite their stock market set backs, their economy is still growing at a pace most other countries would love to have. They are loving domain extensions that used to be shunned outside China, and also the short number and letter domains that have meaning to them. Much of it is a different type of domain investing than many of us have been used to all these years, but you can't argue with all the sales figures and numbers. The numbers are the facts.

I only have two .ws: Apartment and Tutorial, I missed the 4N... was busy with other things.
As hugegrowth said, I see no reason for .ws not to be a good extension in China in terms of letters.
W is really good... And it's much, much better than other gtlds they are buying...

I agree that China is a huge market. I really think we are still at the beginning of the chinese buying boom.
It has really just taken off in the last couple years. There are people in the US, Europe, China and the rest of the world that are really just starting to invest in domains. Many don't even understand their true value.

There are billions of people but very few that invest in domains. When the rest of the world opens there eyes to the potential of a good domain, we will be the ones with the golden eggs, if we are careful.

    Good luck
